Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (Satya Nadella) described Azure Arc this week as the control plane of hybrid cloud computing. Therefore, Azure Arc is designed to include cloud native platforms such as Kubernetes, as well as Windows and Linux instances running inside and outside the cloud. In addition to providing support for Kubernetes clusters, Microsoft and SUSE this week announced Azure Arc support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE CaaS Platform, a Kubernetes-based application development and deployment environment.

Thomas Di Giacomo, chief technology officer of SUSE, says platforms such as Azure Arc are getting attention as organizations adopt modern platforms to build more flexible and resilient cloud native applications. At the same time, organizations are beginning to think about how to reduce the total cost of IT by managing public clouds and local IT platforms in the cloud.

He added that it became particularly important as IT organizations began to realize that they would need to be able to remotely manage highly dispersed IT environments from home after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Microsoft is not the only IT vendor that sees the rise of hybrid cloud computing as an opportunity to expand its reach. Cloud competitors like Amazon Web Services and Google have launched hybrid cloud computing programs, while Dell Technology wants to extend the reach of its management plane to the cloud. As hybrid cloud computing becomes more and more important, competition among all major IT vendors will be particularly fierce in the coming months.

Of course, no two organizations will adopt hybrid cloud computing at the same speed. Most IT organizations have adopted multiple clouds, which are now managed separately from each other. Only a small number of these organizations deploy Kubernetes clusters in large-scale production environments. But companies that do support Kubernetes will find it easy to manage hybrid clouds if they all share a common Kubernetes foundation.
