In March, TCL revealed a proof-of-concept device for the 30-fold rollable display. At the recent Display Technology Conference (DTC 2020), TCL demonstrated the world's first rollable smartphone with an inkjet OLED display.

According to Ross Young, founder of display supply chain consulting firm, TCL subsidiary China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd.'s 4.5-inch rollable display can be expanded to a 6.7-inch large screen. This smaller device scales vertically, so users can take advantage of more screen space.

This is TCL's first rollable smartphone with a printed OLED display.

There is also a prototype device that can scale horizontally. Although the device appears relatively thick, its width can be as high as 17 inches. For the device, the company chose to print organic light emitting diode displays that use organic light emitting diode electrodes for inkjet printing on panels.

It works on the same principle as inkjet printing on paper. According to the company, organic luminescent materials are sprayed and dried to form luminescent films. The company claims that rollable displays have better bending and lower production costs.

Users can stick with smaller screens for everyday use and can expand screens to perform more efficient tasks. Even a year after Galaxy Fold launched, there are still no foldable smartphones on the market. Currently, they cost as much as $1000.

Curlable display technology is still in its infancy.

While foldable phones haven't gone mainstream yet, a commercial launch of foldable phones may not happen anytime soon. If the foldable smartphone debuts in 2021, it will take several years to perfect its practical application. From foldable devices, we can see that the first rollable smartphones will only be aimed at early enthusiasts.

LG also joked about its expandable slide-out smartphone at the launch of the swivel-screen smartphone. Depending on the leak, the next smartphone under Explorer will have a scrollable display. It may appear in the first half of 2021. LG sold its 65-inch curly OLED TV for $65,000.

Samsung is also developing smartphones with scrollable display technology, according to recent patents. On the other hand, there are rumors that Huawei will launch a new foldable smartphone with foldable design before the end of this year. In addition to two scrollable displays, TCL also showcased a 142-inch IGZO glass active MLED display and a 48-inch 8K Mini-LED curved car screen.
