The change of CRSD process in 11g

In 11.2, the CRSD process is no longer one of the most critical processes in RAC.

If you are familiar with 10g RAC, you should be aware of the importance of the CRSD process. After the operating system starts, Oracle starts this process and then starts the entire CLUSTER and database.

In RAC 11.2, Oracle adjusts the ASM so that OCR and VOT can be stored in the ASM disk group. ASM is a component supported by CLUSTER, while the OCR and VOT needed to start CLUSTER are placed in ASM, which actually solves the problem of chicken or egg. Finally, Oracle solves this problem by the way of OHASD process, and the architecture of the whole CLUSTER and ASM has also undergone great changes. OHASD process has replaced CRSD process to become the most critical process in RAC environment.

The importance of the CRSD process has been incredibly low. Two days ago, in a customer's 11.2 RAC environment, it was found that even if the CRSD process of a node was not started, the database could still be started manually and the database could be accessed normally.

The cause of the problem should be an error in the disk group that accesses OCR and VOT on node 2, which causes CRSD to exit automatically after many failed attempts to obtain the information stored in OCR, which makes node 2 unable to start normally. However, at this time, in addition to the CRSD process on node 2, other CLUSTER processes have been fully started, and the ASM instance can also be started, and the database on node 2 can be started manually.

The alert of ASM on node 2 has the following error message:

The database can be opened normally, the database and listening on node 2 cannot be started automatically, and there is also a problem with vip. In addition, the tools on Node 2 that require ocr information, such as ocrconfig, ocrcheck, and srvctl, are not available.
