Manual failover

The current active, passive and witness nodes can be seen on the vCenter HA configuration page; failover can be performed manually during routine maintenance or other times

Through the "start failover" in the upper right, in general, do not check "force immediate failover" so that the data can be synchronized between the primary and secondary nodes, and click on the manual switch. The switching process takes several minutes. VCenter Server will not be available during this process

After the handover is completed, it can be found that the original active node becomes the passive node, while the passive node switches to the active node.

Automatic failover

The vCenter HA cluster state mode is in the "vCenter HA enabled" state, which means that data is replicated between the active and passive nodes, and the passive node automatically switches over if the active node fails.

You can see from the vCenter HA page that the current active node is the second vCenter in this environment

In this environment, the network card of the VCSA is disabled (i.e., "connected" is removed) to simulate network failure.

After configuration confirmation, you can find that because the management IP is on the active node, it will be disconnected for a while. The ping can be restored later when the management IP is transferred to the passive node.

Although the cluster detects an active node failure and takes over the management IP, it will take some time for the vCenter Server to restore service, during which time the vCenter Server will be inaccessible.

The figure below shows the initialization of the waiting state after the passive node takes over as the active node after failover.

After waiting for the vCenter status to reply, we can find that the original active node state is turned off, while the original passive node is switched to the active node state.

Looking at the status of vCenter HA, you can see that database replication is not currently taking place.

Will simulate the failure of the VCSA network recovery, after a while found that the system has detected that the system has been restored

And wait a while for the database to be replicated synchronously and the whole cluster state will return to normal.
