As we all know, the use of software-defined architecture based on standard x86 server platform is an important reason why super-convergence can comprehensively improve the agility and maintainability of user IT architecture. One of the advantages of this architecture over traditional SAN storage using proprietary hardware is that it can quickly introduce the industry's most advanced data center-related components into the product, greatly improving product capabilities.

As the leading super-convergence manufacturer in the industry, SmartX has always worked closely with the world-renowned hardware manufacturers to quickly apply the industry-leading hardware technology to super-integration products.

Recently, SmartX and Intel China conducted joint verification of products based on Intel second-generation Xeon extensible processor platform and Optane SSD combined with SmartX hyperfusion software SMTX OS, and fully verified the significant improvements brought by Optane technology in storage performance and latency in scenarios with low IO Queue Depth, such as Oracle.

Overview of Optane SSD architecture features

Note: the Intel Optane P4800X picture is from the Intel product manual [1].

Intel Optane SSD is based on 3D XPoint technology, reading and writing speed is closer to DRAM, and storage space is comparable to NAND SSD. Compared with NAND SSD,Optane SSD, which has the characteristics of high throughput, low latency, high QoS and extremely long life, it is very suitable to be used as a cache between DRAM and low-speed SSD/HDD in data storage.

The object of this paper is Optane P4800X. The data provided in Intel's official product manual [1] are as follows:

High throughput: Optane P4800X can reach 500k (~ 2GB/s) IOPS at 11:00 queue depth, while general NAND SSD needs higher queue depth to reach its peak, such as 32 (SATA) and 128 (NVMe).

Low latency: Optane P4800X still has a stable read response time that is lower than that of 30us in the context of 2GB/s random write background traffic.

Under the scenario of random write background traffic, 99% read response time of high QoS:Optane P4800X is 60 times lower than that of NAND SSD.

Extremely long life: the Optane P4800X is ideal for scenarios with a large number of write operations, with up to 30 DWPD (JESD219 workload) of writes per day and 41 PBW of P4800X with 750GB capacity.

The following are the laboratory test results of SMTX OS + Optane P4800X in the Oracle scenario. In order to evaluate the performance difference between Optane technology and NAND, we used Intel P4600 for comparative testing.

Description: the following is the laboratory test data, for reference only.

Test environment

1. Hardware environment

Oracle testing requires two test servers to play the roles of Client and Server, respectively, with the same hardware configuration, as shown in the following table. Among them, 2 Optane P4800X SSD are used as Cache layer of SMTX OS distributed storage, and 4 P4500 are used as Capacity layer. During the testing process, the IO mainly falls on the Cache layer.

The configuration of the P4600 environment as a performance reference is consistent with the test target environment, except that the server's Cache Tier is replaced with 2 Intel (R) SSD DC P4600 Series (1.6 TB).

Oracle test deployment diagram

The deployment diagram for the Oracle test is shown in the figure above. Both test servers are running vSphere ESXi 6.5u2 Hypervisor with SCVM (Storage Controller VM, 12 vCPU and 16G memory, running SMTX OS) running on it to provide distributed storage capabilities. They also run Oracle Client VM and Oracle Server VM, respectively.

The configuration of Oracle Client VM is:

VCPU:50

Mem:50G

OS:CentOS 7.5

The configuration of Oracle Server VM is:

There are three configurations for vCPU/Mem:16/64G,32/128G,64/196G

SWAP partition: 33G

OS:RedHat 6.9

Oracle Server:Oracle Server 11.2.0.4

Disks: all disks are generated in SMTX OS's NFS storage, and the number and size of disks are shown in the table below. To prevent competition for SCSI controller, assign different SCSI controller to different Disk Group.

two。 Test parameters

3. Test procedure

The Oracle Server was tested under three configurations of vCPU/Mem: 16Comp64G, 32max 128G and 64Compare 19G, respectively. Finally, the value of the stable stage of TPM is selected as the test result.

Test result

The figure above shows the HammerDB TPM test results of Optane P4800X and P4600 in different Oracle Server configurations.

In a 16 vCPU/64G Mem configuration, the TPM of the P4800X is 3 times that of the P4600.

The TPM of the P4800X is about 30% higher than that of the P4600 in both 32 vCPU/128G Mem and 48 vCPU/192G Mem configurations.

At the same time, from the following TPM curve, we can see that the TPM stability of P4800X is much higher than that of P4600, and there is no obvious performance degradation when there are more vCPU/Mem resources.

Applicable scenario recommendation

From the above test results, SMTX OS + Optane P4800X has a very good performance in the database scenario. More specifically, the combination of SMTX OS + Optane P4800X will have more powerful performance advantages than NAND SSD in some application scenarios where IO Queue Depth is relatively low, low latency is sensitive, and business QoS is pursued. At the same time, the longer life of the Optane P4800X is a better choice for application scenarios with a large number of write operations.
