Animated series can get rid of really crazy ideas because you are less likely to question what you are watching than Reality Show. Take the successful BoJack horse herder as an example to describe the life of the repressed humanoid horse in Hollywood. Or big mouth, explore puberty through a series of anthropomorphic hormonal monsters. If you step back and think about what you are actually watching, it is easy to find out the strange direction of TV in recent years.

Based on the above examples, these high-concept ideas can make animation interesting, and popular ideas are very popular. But not everyone can overcome the noise. Neo Yokio is another strange Netflix series that has been very popular since its launch in 2017. In fact, "under the radar" is an understatement.

For the most part, Neo Yokio is considered a serious business failure, so it's not surprising that it was overshadowed by the more popular Netflix show after a brief debut and Christmas special, which is a pity, because Neo Yokio is an interesting creative experiment in some ways.

Neo Yokio is the creative idea of Vampire weekend lead singer Ezra Koenig, set in a dystopian mash-up in New York and Tokyo, about the life of the purple-haired "magician" (yes, this is the "magical aristocrat") Kaz Kaan socializing with teenagers and playing demon killers. In essence, the New Ganges (fictional cities) were occupied by demons who attracted the wealth and surpluses of their metropolises and asked the magistrates to eliminate these evil forces in the city.

However, the final result does not matter. Neo Yokio long ago eliminated the premise of eliminating demons and turned his attention to Kaz's criticism of his image-oriented lifestyle (he declared: "I seek meaning in the aesthetic cycle of goods"). Since then, Neo Yokio is not sure who he wants to be-- let's continue with art projects and social criticism-- but nonetheless, throughout the short six-episode season and Christmas special (called Neo Yokio: Pink Christmas).

It depends to a large extent on its aesthetics. Neo Yokio may look like anime, but the similarities are only there. Sometimes even satirize this genre with too many action sequences and occasional exclamations, in order to laugh at the artistic style of comics. The real star of the show, and the driving force behind it as a social comment tag, is a seemingly endless reference to popular culture and an obvious commercial implication. From Domino pizzas to Rolex watches to Ralph Lauren's pastries, there are rare scenes of camouflage products, and it is these moments that create the show's modern satire and humor.

If you don't know much about the initial postmodern themes, Neo Yokio is a pleasant and unfamiliar trip. It draws a line between awakening social criticism and absurd self-awareness, occasionally falling into straightforward stupidity ("Wow, you're so cool!") But it managed to retain its unique millennium charm so that it would not fall. The category in which the real animation attempt failed.

That's because it's not a real cartoon at all. In fact, it's not even a TV show, but a collection of unrelated adventures in a glittering animated metropolis.

Neo Yokio is also full of talent, which is outrageous. Jayden Smith is a convincing and spoiled teenager (he is also a meme maker), such as Katz, while Susan Saladin, Steve Basmi, Stephen Fry and Richard Avadi have all taken their comic book talents elsewhere. However, Jude Law stole the limelight because it turned out that Katz's personal butler was actually a naked old woman wrapped in a robot-but who asked?

The soundtrack is also excellent, a far cry from Neo Yokio's ultra-modern aesthetics (very effective). Led by a rocket-powered mechanical assistant, Kaz, accompanied by the sweet voices of Bach, Vivaldi and Rossini, walks through the city's shopping malls, bars and tennis courts, giving the whole show a fresh sense of calm-you never know what you're watching or why, but you've learned not to indulge in it.

Neo Yokio has been described by some as "the worst anime ever". If you are not ready for its strange modernity, you may leave in the same way. However, Ezra Cornich's accepted bizarre attempt to explore lunatics in western society is definitely worth watching: a) trying to figure out what happened, b) laughing loudly at its unpredictability.
