Azure in China recently released the idea of using Azure Backup to back up VM service, which was officially launched on March 1st, which greatly reduces the operation complexity for users who need to back up critical workloads. In the past, we used Powershell to do the backup function of Azure virtual machine, which not only has many limitations, but also is only a snapshot of storage, not a virtual machine.

Azure backup's virtual machine backup service uses Windows's Volume Shadow replication Service (Volume Shadow Copy Service) to take a snapshot of the virtual machine without shutting down the virtual machine, and then save the snapshot transfer to the backup library through the backup service. The backup service will only backup the changed blocks, that is, incremental backups to improve storage efficiency:

The basic Azure backup backup process is as follows:

First create a backup library, and then discover the virtual machines that need to be protected in your current subscription

Register virtual machines that need to be protected and add to the protection list

Set backup strategy to protect virtual machine

Restore your backup to the current virtual machine or other destination virtual machine as needed

The Azure virtual machine backup feature supports backup and recovery of Azure IAAS's Linux and Windows virtual machines, and in this example, I introduce the backup and restore features for CentOS 7.1 and Windows Server 2012.

First, create two test virtual machines, one is Linux CentOS7.1 and the other is Windows Server 2012. During the creation process, note that the virtual machine agent must be installed:

Go back to the Azure management interface. First, let's create a backup vault for the virtual machine, and select New-restore Service-backup vault-Quick create:

3. First of all, we need to configure the data redundancy policy of the vault. Once you have registered the protected items, you cannot change the policy, so the first step is to configure the policy, click the "configuration" item, select the data redundancy policy you want to use, and then save it:

4. Click to enter the "myvmbackup" vault you just created, select the items that have already been registered, and you will see the virtual machines that are not currently registered. The "Discovery" at the bottom of the stand-alone machine will take several minutes to run for the first time. This operation will add the virtual machines in your IAAS to the list of registrable machines.

5. Select the "register" button, you will find that the linuxcent71 and win2012 we created earlier are in the list, select these two machines to register as protected machines, and then confirm:
