Google today launched a new independent podcast app for Android. The app, called Google Podcasts, will use Google's recommendation algorithm to try to connect people to programs they might like, which can be done according to their listening habits. Although podcasts were previously available on Android through Google Play music and third-party apps, Google says the company expects podcasts to bring this form to hundreds of millions of new listeners around the world.

Google Podcasts looks familiar to anyone who has used a podcast application before. It allows you to search for new podcasts, download them, and play them at your convenience. Google said the app would provide more than 2 million podcasts on the day of its launch, including "everything you've ever heard of".

Open the application, and a section called "For you" shows you the new episodes you have subscribed to, the episodes you have listened to but have not yet completed, and a list of downloaded episodes. Scroll down and you will see general and classified top-level and trend podcasts. There is less fine-grained control for podcast players than you use in applications such as Overcast. For example, you cannot customize the skip button or create a podcast playlist to listen to.

Podcasts applications are integrated with Google Smart Assistant, which means you can search for and play podcasts wherever Smart Assistant is enabled. The company synchronizes your location to all Google podcasts, so if you listen to half of the podcasts on your way home from work, you can resume the podcasts in Google Home when you get home.

in the coming months, Google plans to add a set of features to artificial intelligence-powered podcasts. A feature will add closed subtitles to your podcast, so you can listen as you listen. This is useful for people who are hard of hearing or anyone who listens in a noisy environment.

Google also wants to expand the number of podcasts. The company's research shows that only 1/4 of podcasts are hosted by women, and fewer are people of color. To diversify in this area, Google has set up an independent advisory committee to consider how to promote podcast production outside the major metropolitan areas of the US that currently dominate the field.

Google Podcasts Android applications can be downloaded here. There are currently no plans for iOS applications.
