Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--

This article mainly introduces "what is LXD". In daily operation, I believe many people have doubts about what is LXD. The editor consulted all kinds of materials and sorted out simple and easy-to-use methods of operation. I hope it will be helpful for you to answer the doubts about "what is LXD?" Next, please follow the editor to study!

What is LXD?

LXD is the next generation of system container management system. It provides a user experience similar to a virtual machine, but uses a Linux container.

It is based on prefabricated images of a large number of Linux distributions and is built on a very powerful but very simple REST API.

To better understand what LXD is and what it does, you can try it online! So if you want to run it locally, please see our getting started guide.

The LXD project was established and is currently led by Canonical Co., Ltd. with contributions from a range of other companies and individual contributors.

Design

At the heart of LXD is a privileged daemon that exposes a REST API through a local unix socket and over the network (if enabled).

The client, such as the command-line tool provided with the LXD itself, then performs all operations through the REST API. This means that everything works the same way whether you are talking to a local host or a remote server.

Features

Some of the biggest features of LXD:

Design security (unprivileged containers, resource restrictions, etc.)

Scalable (from laptop containers to thousands of computing nodes)

Intuitive (simple, clear API and clear command line experience)

Image-based (various Linux distributions are released every day)

Support for transfer across host containers and images (including live migration with CRIU)

Advanced resource control (cpu, memory, network IZP O, block IZP O, disk usage and kernel resources)

Device pass-through (USB,GPU,unix characters and block devices, NIC, disks and paths)

Network management (bridge creation and configuration, cross-host tunnel,.)

Storage management (supports multiple storage backgrounds, storage pools, and storage volumes)

Integrate with OpenStack

The "nova-lxd" project provides an OpenStack Nova plug-in that seamlessly integrates system containers into regular OpenStack deployments.

In this way, the user will get a virtual machine or container, depending on the image or the type of instance they choose. It is completely transparent and works with regular OpenStack API.

To learn more about LXD and OpenStack, check out the page where we started using OpenStack.

Usability

LXD works with any recent Linux distribution. The LXD upstream maintains the Ubuntu package directly and also publishes snapshot packages that can be used with most popular Linux distributions.

For more information, please see our getting started page.

Relationship with LXC

LXD is not rewriting LXC, it is actually based on LXC, providing a new and better user experience. Under the hood, LXD uses LXC to create and manage containers through liblxc and its Go bindings.

It is basically an alternative to LXC's tools and distribution template system, with additional functions that can be controlled over the network.

At this point, the study of "what is LXD" is over. I hope to be able to solve your doubts. The collocation of theory and practice can better help you learn, go and try it!
