Recently, due to the work of the reason to contact a lot of want to become a DBA or have been in contact with the database for a period of time want to DBA direction of development friends, but overall feel that we may work on the DBA content and how to become a qualified DBA is not very understanding, so there is a want to write an article, I have been engaged in DBA work for more than ten years some of the insights, to share with you. DBA is the abbreviation of English Database Administrator, that is, database administrator, is responsible for maintaining and managing the database server professional and technical personnel. Before as DBA we have to maintain some relational databases such as Oracle, SQL Server,MySQL,DB2, etc., and now with the development of technology DBA sometimes responsible for maintaining some non-relational databases such as MongDB, Redis, etc.

You might think I'd start by explaining how to maintain and manage these database services, but this isn't a technical article, so you won't see anything too technical here. All I'm talking about here is what skills or preparations we need to have as a qualified DBA. Below, I would like to talk about my personal perception of DBA this work understanding.

First of all, DBA is a comprehensive job. DBA itself is a collection of both operation and development work content, in other words, to be a qualified DBA is not only to understand the database system we manage and maintain, but also to understand the maintenance knowledge of the operating system on which the database system depends. At the same time, as a DBA inevitably to contact the optimization of SQL statements but also to provide some technical support for SQL developers, so we have to be more familiar with the use of SQL statements than developers, more understand how to measure the performance of a SQL and how to optimize the performance of queries. So in my opinion a qualified DBA engineer = systems engineer + storage engineer +SQL development engineer. So to become a qualified DBA not only to learn how to use and manage the database but also learn how to SQL development, how to maintain and select server software and hardware. SQL development skills are exactly what many friends who want to move from the system operation and maintenance field to the DBA field lack, and for some friends who want to move from development to DBA, they lack relevant server operation and maintenance work experience.

Secondly, DBA work is a very need for responsibility and careful work, in my recent years of recruitment DBA experience, in the actual work I would rather find some strong sense of responsibility for the work is very serious but lack of work experience do not want to find those who are technically very cattle but lack of responsibility. Because databases are so important to an enterprise in every way, a simple misoperation can cause serious financial losses to a company if the people who manage and maintain them lack responsibility or are careless.

Finally, there is also a point to note that we must do a good database backup, which is the most basic condition to become a qualified DBA. I won't stress the importance of database backup here. In short, if you don't backup the database you manage and maintain, you must not be a qualified DBA.
