Basic installation

If you are a novice in installing Linux, this section is very helpful to you. Otherwise, you can skip this section and browse directly for the repair work after installation.

1 upgrade the parts of MacBook to * * version. One of the simplest ways to do this is to use Mac OS X's "software upgrade" feature.

2 download the installation DVD for Fedora 10. Note that I only tested the x86x64 version. Burn after MD5 verification.

3 install rEFIt in OS X, if you want to select OS X/Fedora at startup. Note that MacBook uses EFI to boot the system instead of BIOS. Although this is an optional installation, it is highly recommended. The wizard assumes that you have installed the software. You can change the default system and wait time at startup by editing "refit.conf".

4 use the disk tool in OS X or Boot Camp to change the partition size of OS X. Reserve at least 20g of disk space for Fedora. The amount of space left depends on the purpose of the Linux (Matlab,intel MKL,ifort is very large). Put the Fedora 10 installation DVD into the CD drive and restart.

5 if you have already installed rEFIt, restart and select Boot from DVD. Otherwise, press and hold the'c 'key to start from DVD at startup.

Install Fedora normally

1 when partitioning, select to edit the partition table manually

2 create a 200MB boot partition and mount the point "/ boot". (/ dev/sda3)

3 create a partition in ext3 format, and mount the point "/" as the primary partition of Fedora (/ dev/sda4). Reserve space for 2GB as a swap partition.

4 create a swap partition (/ dev/sda5)

7 restart after installation

8 if you have already installed rEFIt, restart and select Linux.

9 Log in to Fedora 10

10 follow the steps below to install and adjust features that Fedora 10 cannot use immediately.

Post-installation steps

Note: MacBook's wireless network card is not working yet. You need an available Ethernet network connection to complete the following steps.

Use yum to upgrade the package of Fedora to the * version.

Su-

Yum update

This will take a long time, choose a faster time to complete the work (such as early morning). You can also use yum's acceleration plug-ins, such as fastestmirror.

Repair the wireless network card

The wireless card used by MacBook is Broadcom 4328. This network card does not work on Fedora 10 by default.

Install unofficial source rpmfusion

The required driver rpm packages broadcom-wl and wl-kmod can be found in rpmfusion.org. Install rpmfusion free and non-free sources.
