Language

By selecting language from the tools menu, the selected text or the entire text (if nothing is selected) will be analyzed, and you can see which words are nouns, verbs, and so on. It is not available in all languages, only for macOS 10.14 or later.

Focus

When you choose focus from the View menu, Smultron removes all distractions and displays only a small portion of the text so that you only focus on the content.

Column

By choosing columns from the tools menu, if nothing is selected, the selected text or the entire text is divided by its delimiter. For example, if table data is separated by commas, each value gets its own column, and each row has its own row. The first row of data will be used for column headings. You can then sort the data by clicking the header, reorder the columns, and then edit the value or delete the column or row by Ctrl-clicking the value or row or column. When you are ready to reinsert changed data, you can also choose to change the delimiter to, for example, a semicolon.

Split window

Choose the split window from the View menu so you can see two different parts of the document. By holding down the option key while selecting a menu item, you can split the window horizontally instead of the default vertical split.

Folder

With folders, you can select a folder from disk that displays all its contents (including subfolders) in the Smultron window so that you can easily select files to open as documents in Smultron. You can also filter to view only the documents you are interested in. When you choose to delete a folder (by selecting an added root folder and pressing "-"), it will not delete the folder from disk, only from this window in Smultron.

Smultron fully supports storing your documents in iCloud so that you can access them on all computers.

Open a file using the Open document toolbar icon (or choose Open document from the View menu), you can display all open documents in the window and reorder the documents in the list. You can also drag other unopened documents into the window to open them, and you can drag some selected text to a new document that contains the text. To get the size of icons and text, Smultron uses the settings in system preferences-General-sidebar icon size.

Compare to

Using the compare feature on the tools menu, you can compare two open documents that have been saved at least once. The change will be color-coded and will display symbols at the beginning of the change: green and "+" for added lines, "-" for red and deleted lines, and "?" for yellow and changed lines.

You can edit the document full screen by selecting go to full screen in the View menu (nothing else is visible, but you can display the menu bar by moving the mouse over the top of the screen).

Code snippets are snippets of text that you often use or want to easily access. Include% s in the text, which will be replaced by the current selection. You can also double-click an item in the list to insert the snippet into the current document, or double-click to hold the Option key to edit the snippet.

Close the label

This attempts to find the correct tag to close by counting the number of tags that have been closed and open, so that you can find the last tag that has not been closed. Note that this feature applies only to enclosed tags.

Preview

This allows you to preview the contents of the current document. You can choose the application selected in Smultron or in the system (using the information in Finder) to open it for this type of document.

Command

If you want to compile some code or validate HTML documents, you can run commands from Smultron. If inline is selected, the results of the command are displayed or inserted. You can include some special code in the command:% p to get the full path to the current document,% d for directories,% s to output the selected text to a temporary file and replace this code with path,%% t replaced by the path of the writable temporary directory. You can run or edit the command by selecting a project, and then click the icon at the bottom.
