In an ongoing dispute with FAA and the aviation industry, Verizon today flipped the switch on the if 5G deployment, which uses the spectrum the company spent tens of billions of dollars on at C-band auctions. The new and faster level of 5G connectivity will significantly enhance Verizon's "5G UWB" network, which has so far relied entirely on the extremely fast but hard-to-find millimeter wave spectrum.

The if 5G has overcome many of the obstacles that make mmW the first hurdle for competitors such as T-Mobile: it is actually available indoors and its coverage does not change unusually on a street. Customers with compatible phones should experience significantly faster data speeds than Verizon's "5G Nationwide" network, which provides a wide range of signals, but download and upload performance is not much better than LTE in many cases.

Verizon said that all of its currently released phones will support C-band 5G, and the operator expects to provide more than 20 compatible phones by the end of 2022.
