Gas protection is divided into light gas protection and heavy gas protection. Light gas protection acts on signal, heavy gas protection acts on trip, and heavy gas protection acts on transformer disconnection.

2. Light gas protection

Light gas protection relay consists of open cup, dry spring contact, etc. During operation, the relay is filled with transformer oil, the open cup is immersed in the oil and is in the floating position, and the dry spring contact is disconnected. When a slight fault or abnormality occurs inside the transformer, the fault point is partially overheated, causing part of the oil to expand, the gas in the oil is expelled, forming bubbles, entering the gas relay, causing the oil level to drop, the open cup rotates, and the dry spring contact is closed, sending out signals.

3. Heavy gas protection

Heavy gas protection relay consists of baffle, spring and dry spring contact.

When a serious fault occurs in the transformer oil tank, a large fault current and arc cause a large amount of transformer oil to decompose, resulting in a large amount of vapor, so that the transformer oil injection, oil flow impact baffle, drive the magnet and make the dry spring contact closed, acting on the transformer.

It should be pointed out that heavy gas protection is the main protection for internal faults of oil tank, which can reflect various faults inside transformer. When inter-turn short circuit occurs in a few windings of transformer, although the fault current at the fault point is very large, the differential current generated in differential protection may be small, and differential protection may refuse to operate. At this time, rely on heavy gas protection to remove the fault.

4. Pressure protection

Pressure protection is also the main protection for internal faults of transformer oil tank. Its principle of action is basically the same as heavy gas protection, but it is a reaction to the pressure of transformer oil.

Pressure relay, also known as pressure switch, consists of spring and contact. It is placed on the upper part of transformer body oil tank.

When the transformer internal fault, the temperature rises, oil expansion pressure increases, spring action to drive the relay moving contact, make the contact closed, cut off the transformer.

5. Temperature and oil level protection

When the transformer temperature rises, the temperature protection action sends out alarm signal.

The oil level is a protection that reflects abnormal oil levels in the tank. During operation, when the oil level drops due to transformer oil leakage or other reasons, the alarm signal will be sent out.

6, cooler full stop protection

In order to improve the transmission capacity, large transformers are equipped with various cooling systems. In operation, if the cooling system is completely shut down, the temperature of the transformer will rise. If it is not handled immediately, it may lead to insulation damage of transformer windings.

Cooler full-stop protection, is in the transformer operation cooler full-stop action. Alarm signal shall be sent out immediately after its operation, and transformer shall be removed after long delay.
