Azure Backup offers a variety of backup solutions based on backup requirements and infrastructure topologies (on-premises and Azure). Any backup user or administrator should see the contents of all solutions and want to be notified in important scenarios. This article details the monitoring and notification capabilities provided by the Azure backup service.

Backup jobs in the Recovery Services repository

Azure backups provide built-in monitoring and alerting capabilities for workloads protected by Azure backups. In the Recovery Services vault settings, the Monitoring section provides built-in jobs and alerts.

Jobs are generated when performing configuration backups, backups, restores, deletions, and so on.

The jobs in the Azure backup solution are as follows:

Azure VM backup Azure file backup Azure workload backup, such as SQLAzure backup Agent (MAB)

Jobs in System Center Data Protection Manager (SC-DPM), Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) are not displayed.

Backup alerts in the Recovery Services vault

Alerts are mainly about notifying users so that they can take relevant actions. The backup Alerts section shows the alerts generated by the Azure backup service. These alerts are defined by the service, and users cannot customize to create any alerts.

Alarm scheme

The following scenarios are defined as alertable scenarios by the service.

Backup / restore failure exception when backup is successful and warning is issued using reserved data to stop protection / using deleted data to stop protection without an alarm

When a fault does not raise an alarm, there are generally only the following situations:

The user explicitly canceled the running job failed because another backup job is in progress (because we only need to wait for the last job to complete before we need to perform the operation here) the VM backup job failed because the backup Azure VM no longer exists

The above exceptions are mainly user-triggered and immediately displayed on the portal / PS / CLI client. Therefore, the user is immediately aware of it and does not need to be notified.

The alerts for the Azure backup solution are as follows: Azure VM backup Azure file backup Azure workload backup, such as SQLAzure backup Agent (MAB) alert type

Depending on the severity of the alert, alerts can be defined as three types:

Critical: in principle, any backup or restore failure (scheduled or user-triggered) will result in alerts generated and displayed as critical alerts and destructive actions such as deleting backups. Warning: if the backup operation is successful with few warnings, it is listed as a warning alert. Info: as of today, the Azure backup service has not generated any informational alerts. Configure backup alert notification

When an alarm occurs, the user is notified. Azure backup provides a built-in notification mechanism via email. You can specify a personal e-mail address or distribution list to notify when an alert is generated. You can also choose whether to get notifications for each alert, or to group them by hourly summary, and then notify users. To configure notifications, configure notifications in the backup vault-backup alerts in monitoring, as shown in the following figure

Click to open

Fill in the email address, select the severity type, and then click Save

After you configure the notification, the user will receive a welcome call or an introductory email. This confirms that Azure Backup can send emails to these addresses when alerts are issued.

If you set the frequency to hourly summary and raise and resolve alerts within one hour, it will not be part of the upcoming hourly summary.
