The XML schema describes the structure of the XML document and the different constraints on the data in the document. When you specify a XPath query against the schema, the structure of the returned XML document is determined by the schema against which the XPath query is executed.

In Microsoft ®SQL Server ™2000, schemas are created using the simplified XML-Data (XDR) language. XDR is a flexible language that overcomes some of the limitations of the document type definition (DTD) used to describe the document structure. Unlike DTD, XDR schemas use the same syntax as XML documents to describe the document structure. In addition, in DTD, all data content is character data. The XDR language schema allows you to specify the data type of an element or feature.

In an XDR schema, the element contains the entire schema. As an attribute of an element, you can describe the properties that define the schema name and the namespace in which the schema resides. In the XDR language, all element declarations must be included in the element.
