1. Download vmtools

Open the official site: https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/downloads

Enter vmtools in the search bar

Find a suitable version to download

Decompression

two。 Upload to ESXi or shared storage

Select ESXI host-configure storage, where local storage datastore1 is selected

Right-click on datastore1 and select "Browse data Store"

Select the tools folder to upload

After the upload is successful, you can see an extra vmtools folder. If you open it, you can see the iso images with various vmtools in it.

3. Install vmtools

Install vmtools under windows

In the list of virtual machines, locate the windows 2003 for which you need to install vmtools

Right-click "Open console" to log in to the system

Since the windows 2003 CD was used in the previous installation, you need to eject the CD image first, and then hang the windows image in vmtools.

Then edit the virtual machine settings and replace the CD image with vmtools's ISO file

Then go back to the console.

Windows will begin to install vmtools automatically and go straight to the next step to complete the installation.

Note: since this is the first time to install vmtools, the system will require a reboot to apply the update after the installation is complete. (no need to restart when upgrading vmtools later)

When the restart is complete, the installation is complete.

Vmtools installation under Linux

Similarly, uninstall the previous system installation CD and mount the vmtools. Note that this is the vmtools under the mount linux.

Note: if you previously mounted the system disk, you must enter the system and uninstall the system image ISO before you can replace it with the vmtools image.

Go back to the console, open the command line, and use the mount command to mount the vmtools image you just replaced

Mount / dev/cdrom / media

It will be prompted that the mounted image is read-only: mount:block device / dev/cdrom is write-protected,mounting read-only

Enter / media and you can see a VMwareTools-10.0.8-3746311.tar.gz

Since the files in the CD image are read-only, we copy them out and extract them for installation.

Cp VMwareTools-10.0.8-3746311.tar.gz / root

Then change to the / root directory and extract the installation

Tar-xvf VMwareTools-10.0.8-3746311.tar.gz

You can see that there is an extra vmware-tools-distrib folder under / root.

If you look inside, you can find a vmware-install.pl file.
