Introduction to SCCM Architectur

To put it simply, System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM/ConfigMgr) is developed from SMS (Systems Management Server). As an enterprise-level client and server management platform, it provides rapid and effective configuration management, software distribution, system deployment, software and hardware assets and other perfect solutions.

Today we will start with the architecture of SCCM and introduce the main components and functions of SCCM one by one. For convenience of description, System Center Configuration Manager is abbreviated to ConfigMgr/SCCM in all subsequent articles.

Site level (Site Hierarchy)

The whole SCCM hierarchy takes the site as the boundary, and it mainly serves as the management boundary.

A site hierarchy must contain a primary site, and if there are multiple primary sites in the hierarchy, a central management site must be introduced.

Central management site (Central Administration Site): the site at the highest level in hierarchical logic, mainly used to manage other sites and accelerate communication between sites. It should be noted that the central management site does not directly face the SCCM client, and the central management site can only use the main site as a subsite.

Primary site (Primary Site): users of the primary site directly manage SCCM clients, and each SCCM client must be assigned to a primary site before it can be added to the SCCM hierarchy to be managed. The primary site can only use the secondary site as a subsite.

Auxiliary site (Secondary Site): the auxiliary site plays the role of content and policy distribution in the small branch offices of the enterprise, in order to prevent the client from requesting services across geographic locations. In no special cases, the auxiliary site can be replaced by remote distribution points and management points. Primary site system role (Site System Role) component server (Component Server): any server running the ConfigMgr executor (SMS Exec) is a component server. Site database server (Site Database Server): there must be a SQL server in the SCCM shelf as the database for its site to host all data from the site and the client. Site server (Site Server): as the most important role in a site, it runs all the components and services needed by the center to manage the site, primary site, or secondary site. Site system (Site System): any server that hosts the SCCM role will automatically assign this role. SMS provider: a WMI provider that provides an interface between ConfigMgr Console and the site database server. Because SCCM uses WMI (WQL language), and SQL database runs SQL instance, it can be understood simply that WQL is translated into SQL through SMS Provider, and finally the interaction between SCCM and SQL is realized. The roles mentioned above are all necessary for the normal operation of a site, and without them, the site itself will not function properly. Some commonly used optional site roles are listed below. These roles are for the ConfigMgr client, and are mainly used to provide the client with various functions of ConfigMgr. We will introduce some other roles in detail if they are involved in the following articles.

Application directory Web service point (Application Catalog Web Service Point): application directory Web service point retrieves software information for the application catalog site. Application Directory Web site (Application Catalog Website Point): the application directory site is responsible for presenting available software information to browser users. Distribution point (Distribution Point): the distribution point carries the source files of all kinds of applications, software updates, and operating systems, and sends them to the client when the client makes a request. Fallback status point (Fallback Status Point): when the client cannot communicate with the management point, it collects the status information of the client and finally sends it to the site server, such as the status information generated during the installation of the target system on the client. Management point (Management Point): responsible for accelerating the communication between the ConfigMgr client and the site server, such as pulling policy information for the client, providing content location information, collecting client status and software and hardware information, and so on. Reporting Service site (Reporting Services Point): provides the statistical reporting function of SCCM through SQL Server Reporting Services. Software update point (Software Update Point): provides software update management function under SCCM system.

Site, role level

In the SCCM hierarchy, there can be specific types of site roles under specific types of sites, while some site roles are oriented to the entire level, and some serve the site level, and the corresponding relationships are as follows:

H: hierarchical level, indicating that this role serves the hierarchical level. S: site level, indicating that this role serves only the site where it is located. Y: applies to the current site type.
