Kubernetes version 1.14 GA is a major update to Kubernetes, an open source cloud native platform, in 2019. Starting March 25, this version is officially available for full use by developers.

Kubernetes, hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), provides containerized applications with the management features required by application cloud platforms such as automatic deployment, Auto Scaling, resource scheduling, Load Balancer and service discovery. Kubernetes 1.14 adds 31 new features, including 10 GA features, 12 beta features, and 7 new features. 1.14 Version, in addition to scalability, the biggest highlight is the ability to provide production-level Windows node support.

Kubernetes has supported Linux since its inception, but with the release of version 1.14, production level Windows node support is available, representing a further increase in Kubernetes scalability and stability. Windows Node support enables Windows OS administrators to use Kubernetes for container scheduling and management.

Kubernetes 1.14 Release Lead said: "Kubernetes 1.14 features enhancements that are more stable than any previous release. To ensure stability, which is Kubernetes 'eternal commitment to the community, Portworx enhances the security of cloud-native data. "

In previous versions, Windows nodes in Kubernetes were in beta, allowing you to experiment and see the value of Kubernetes for Windows containers. Kubernetes version 1.14 now officially supports adding Windows nodes as worker nodes and using Windows containers, enabling a large ecosystem of Windows applications to leverage the power of the Kubernetes platform. Regardless of the operating system, enterprises using Windows-based or Linux-based applications no longer have to find a separate coordinator to manage their workloads, increasing the operational efficiency of the entire deployment.

Some of the main features of using Windows containers in Kubernetes include:

Windows Server 2019 worker node support containers;

Support Azure-CNI, OVN-Kubernetes and Flannel tree networks;

Improved support for pods, service types, workload controllers, and metrics/quotes to closely match what Linux containers offer.

Obviously, Windows containers have brought a whole new change to Kubernetes, and there are many applications that work differently on Windows containers than on Linux. Comments suggest that Windows support better explains what Kubernetes is and how it behaves under different operating systems and different operating environments. The Kubernetes release is also a test to see if companies are really willing to orchestrate workloads on a hybrid OS cluster.

Kubernetes version 1.14 is a milestone after Kubernetes 1.13, and Kubernetes support for Windows shows that Docker has been working with Microsoft on Windows containers for the past five years. Microsoft and the Kubernetes community worked together to develop key components such as Docker Engine and containerd, storage and networking, which are the most important parts of version 1.14.
