In 2001, the HapMap Alliance launched the HapMap project, which aims to construct a haploid map of the human genome, which is completed by researchers from many countries and organizations. Through the analysis of more than 1000 people from different regions, a large number of variation sites and genotype information were obtained, which were made public free of charge all over the world.

Through the construction of high-density SNP maps with a large number of samples, more reliable association analysis results can be obtained, which provides a data basis for human molecular genetic mechanism and disease-related research, and is of milestone significance for human genome research. It opens a new era of population genetic research.

The program is divided into three phases. In 2005, the data of the first phase was released, providing SNP typing results of 270samples from four different populations, namely CEU, CHB,JPT and YRI. In 2007, the data of the second phase was released, which added more than 2.1 million SNP loci to the SNP loci found in the first phase, providing a higher density SNP map. In the third stage, more people and samples were sequenced, and a large number of low-frequency SNP sites were also provided.

In the HapMap program, all the samples came from the following 11 populations.
