Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

This article will explain in detail what the 2018 JVM ecosystem report is like. The editor thinks it is very practical, so I share it with you as a reference. I hope you can get something after reading this article.

The JVM ecosystem report is a microcosm of the use of Java developer tools.

Here are five interesting things in the report:

Java 8 dominates

79% of Java developers use Java 8 as the primary platform for the production environment. It seems that Java developers are finally abandoning Java 7, but the pace of adoption of Java 9 is relatively slow. Interestingly, although there is a trend to adopt Java 9, this is a slow start.

IntelliJ proves that developers are willing to pay for tools.

I have worked for open source tools and Java IDE for quite a long time. Open source tools make it difficult for IDE vendors to sell their products to developers. Here, I am very surprised to see that 32% of Java developers are willing to buy IntelliJ IDEA. This ratio is very close to the proportion of Eclipse users, which is 38 per cent. Congratulations to IntelliJ, this figure proves that developers are willing to pay for their IDE.

Gradle failed to shake the throne of Maven.

A few years ago, Gradle was a newcomer to the field of building tools. The momentum of Gradle looks set to eclipse Maven, the king of build tools. However, Gradle's growth seems to have slowed. 60% of developers use Maven, while only 19% use Gradle. Sometimes it is quite difficult to replace the existing infrastructure.

GitHub is not the king of code repository.

Loosely speaking, most open source projects use GitHub. So the answer to the question "what kind of code repository to use in your main development project" surprised me a bit. GitHub and Bitbucket each account for 25 per cent, followed by GitLab at 20 per cent. The scope of the answer includes both private and public code repositories, so the answer is not limited to the open source domain. However, you can see that Bitbucket and GItLabs are doing very well. It's nice to see that GitHub has some equal competitors.

Software release cycle is shortened

I don't remember any survey asking this question, "how often do you release a new version of the code?" This interesting question is mentioned in this report. 72% of the respondents said they posted it once a month, which surprised me a little bit. Agile development and DevOps certainly have a significant impact on shortening the release cycle.

Thanks to the authors of the report, Simon Maple and Andrew Binstock. These surveys take a lot of time, and the publication of the findings is a valuable asset to the whole community!
