Editor to share with you how to use Ubuntu 10.10 to build Time Machine backup server, I hope you will learn something after reading this article, let's discuss it together!
Apple Mac OSX comes with an easy-to-use backup software called Time Machine. "Time Machine automatically saves * versions of everything in Mac, including photos, music, videos, documents, applications and settings. You can easily turn back time and restore any file as long as you need it." To use Time Machine you must use an external hard drive or purchase an Apple Time Capsule to back up over a wireless network. Because Time Machine can back up incremental backups every hour (that is, only changed documents), if you use MacBook (pro/air) and the documents change frequently, the solution of * * should be to allow the system to back up automatically all the time silently over the network.
Here's a simple way to turn your computer into a Time Machine backup server by simply setting up Ubuntu 10. (PS: theoretically, all Linux systems can be implemented. Since I am using Ubuntu 10.10, I will only introduce the setting method @ ivarptr of this system.)
1. Install Netatalk
Netatalk is a free and open source implementation of the AppleTalk communication protocol, through which Linux or BSD can act as Mac's file server (AppleShare file server, aka AFP), AppleTalk routing, print server, etc.
Install netatalk using the following command:
Sudo apt-get install netatalk
2. Set the location of Time Machine backup files
You can find the partition with more spare space on the system, and then create a folder in it as the location where the backup files are stored. For example, my system is / backup/TimeMachine, and then write this path to the configuration file / etc/netatak/AppleVolumes.default:
# ~ / "Home Directory" / backup/TimeMachine "TimeMachine" options:tm
The * line * * is commented out because he will take each user's Home directory as the AFP directory, which will disturb the files in our Home directory. The key point is "options:tm", which means to let netatalk act as a Time Machine server.
3. Install and configure Avahi
Avahi is an open source implementation of the Apple's Zeroconf protocol that implements Bonjour-like functions that allow you to automatically discover your Ubuntu machine in the Mac system. In Ubuntu 10.10, avahi-daemon is installed by default, so we just need to configure it, create the file / etc/avahi/services/afpd.service, and write the following
% h_afpovertcp._tcp548_device-info._tcp0model=Xserve
4. Restart netatalk and avahi
Sudo service netatalk restartsudo service avahi-daemon restart (looks like you don't have to restart it)
5. Settings on Mac OSX side
Open "Finder"-> "go to"-> "Connect to the server …" -> "Browse", you should see your Ubuntu computer at this time. After logging in with the account and password in the Ubuntu system, you should see the "TimeMachine" folder. Try to create a folder in it to test whether you have write permission. If you cannot create a folder, you need to return to Ubuntu to add write permission to the "TimeMachine" folder.
Then open a terminal in Mac (located in applications-> Utilities-> Terminal), and execute this command so that Time Machine can use the network disk as the backup destination:
Defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Open system preferences-> Time Machine-> Open-> Select disk and select the Time Machine folder.
Now that all the settings are complete, let's test it.
Click the Time Machine icon on the menu bar, and then click "backup now". If there is no problem, you should start backing up files. * backup takes a long time, so * connect the AC power and set the energy saver to never go to sleep.
