The Windows Defender update destroys the antivirus scan on Windows 10, and the antivirus protection software reports an "items skipped during scan" error. For many users, the Windows Defender scan failed after a few minutes, confirming that the scan was "skipped" and that no threat was found on the device.

It is not clear which items Windows Defender skipped during the scan and whether Microsoft's antivirus software missed some threats on Windows 10.

Foreign media Windows latest said that the Windows Defender warning may be false and the scan has been performed successfully. In its test, both manual and automatic scans failed with the following error message:

Items in the scan are skipped due to exclusion settings or network scanning disabled by the administrator.

This error was introduced in Windows Defender 4.18.2003 or later when Microsoft tried to solve other problems. The IT family learned that the issue was specific to Windows 10 systems because other Windows operating systems, including Windows 7 and 8, were not affected by the failure.

"I did get the message through a manual quick scan or a full scan. Whether to turn off cloud protection or controlled folder access occurs. I didn't try any other settings. I didn't rule out any folders," one user reported.

According to the error message, Windows Defender antivirus scanning is skipped due to the exclusion of the project or network scanning settings. Since exclusion does not seem to be a problem in user reports, it is likely to be related to specific defense program updates or other updates pushed by Microsoft and device manufacturers.

Microsoft has not documented the problem with Windows Defender, but it seems that offline scanning is working properly.
