IGMPv1: defines the basic group membership query and reporting process

Last Hop router sends Query message to 224.0.0.1 periodically (60s) for client discovery

The hosts in the network segment send Report messages to confirm the Query and actively inform the router of the group they join.

After that, the Last Hop router sends Query message to 224.0.0.1 periodically (60s) to maintain the group membership. If Report message is not received for 180s, it considers that the group member does not exist and deletes the group membership information.

Once any group member sends a Report message, the other group members will be suppressed and no Report message will be sent.

In IGMPv1, when a group member leaves the group, it does not inform the Last Hop router, but silently leaves. At this time, the Last Hop router will send data to the group if it receives multicast messages.

IGMPv2 (multiple Last Hop routers)

In a multicast network with multiple Last Hop routers, initially all Last Hop routers send Query messages to select Queries, and routers with small IP addresses become Queries. After that, multicast messages are sent by the inquirer.

It sends Query messages periodically (60s). If Query messages are not received within 120s, non-queries with small IP addresses will become Queries.
