Using HAProxy in MS Exchange 2010

Although the service array provided by MS Exchange 2010 ensures high availability, it lacks a load balancing mechanism to balance traffic between services hosted by client access servers (CAS) and Edge Transport servers.

Using HAProxy load balancers in MS Exchange 2010 has the following advantages:

Application-aware health checks that provide the status of services rather than simple ping

Granularity persistence approach applies to Exchange services and client software and architectures

SSL uninstall to handle SSL connections to CAS array servers so that those servers can focus on their jobs

Scale up: vertically scale Architectur

Scale out: add more nodes to the CAS array by splitting the service on the load balancer side and dedicating the server to the service

Supported version

You can use HAProxy:2010,2010 SP1,2010 SP2,2010 SP3 in the following versions of Microsoft Exchange

MS Exchange 2010: quick Review

Microsoft Exchange 2010 provides companies with e-mail, calendars and contacts on computers, phones and the Internet.

In Microsoft Exchange 2010, you can dedicate roles to servers and use load balancers to build redundant platforms to allow clients to connect to services. It is also extensible.

There are five server roles: mailbox, client access, Hub Transport, Unified messaging and Edge Transport server.

HAProxy balances services from client access, Hub Transport, and Edge Transport servers.

Port and protocol

The following table summarizes the different ports and protocols involved on the client access server.

Static ports for RPC Client Access and Address Book services are selected randomly by default.

TCP Port Protocol CAS Service

80 and 443 HTTP / HTTPs

Automatic discovery (AS)

Exchange ActiveSync (EAS)

Exchange Control Panel (ECP)

Offline address Book (OAB)

Outlook Anywhere (OA)

Outlook Web App (OWA)

110and 995POP3 / POP3s POP3

135 TCP RPC end Point Mapper (EPM)

143and 993IMAP / IMAP IMAP4

60000 static port for TCP RPC client access service

60001 TCP static Port address Book Service

Warning

Microsoft recommends that any port in the range 59531 to 60554 be used, and the same port should be used on all client access servers within the same AD site.

Role purpose

Client access the front-end server to which the client connects to access their email, contacts and agenda

The Edge Transport server handles Internet-oriented mail flow and has security features (anti-virus and anti-spam).

Exchange 2010 Mail Router in Hub Transportation Organization

Mailbox A server that hosts e-mail (in a mailbox) public folder
