Using HAProxy in MS Exchange 2010

Although the service array provided by MS Exchange 2010 ensures high availability, it lacks a load balancing mechanism to balance traffic between services hosted by client access servers (CAS) and Edge Transport servers.

Using HAProxy load balancers in MS Exchange 2010 has the following advantages:

Application-aware health checks that provide the status of services rather than simple ping

Granularity persistence approach applies to Exchange services and client software and architectures

SSL uninstall to handle SSL connections to CAS array servers so that those servers can focus on their jobs

Scale up: vertically scale Architectur

Scale out: add more nodes to the CAS array by splitting the service on the load balancer side and dedicating the server to the service

Warning

Microsoft recommends that any port in the range 59531 to 60554 be used, and the same port should be used on all client access servers within the same AD site.

Role purpose

Client access the front-end server to which the client connects to access their email, contacts and agenda

The Edge Transport server handles Internet-oriented mail flow and has security features (anti-virus and anti-spam).
