Upgrade the WINDOWS 2000 SERVER computer to a domain controller by installing active Directory, and then demote the domain controller to a stand-alone server. Before installing active Directory, verify that the computer has at least one NTFS partition.

Step 1: install the domain controller.

Create * domain controllers in the new domain by installing the active Directory. The DNS name of the domain is test.com,NETBIOS and the name is TEST.

1) Click start, click run, and then type "dcpromo" in the "Open" box of the "run" dialog box.

And click the OK button. On the welcome page, click the next button.

2) on the Domain Controller Type page, click Domain Controller for New Domain, and then click the next button.

3) on the create a directory tree or subdomain page, click create a new domain directory tree, and then click the next button.

4) on the create or join Forest page, click the create a new domain forest option, and then click the next button.

5) on the New Domain name page, type the DNS full name test.com for the new domain, and then click the next button.

6) on the NetBIOS Domain name page, type the NetBIOS name TEST for the new domain, and then click the next button.

7) on the Database and Log File location page, specify the location where the active directory database and log files are stored, accept the default settings, and then click the next button.

8) on the shared system volumes page, specify the location of the folder shared as the system volume, accept the default settings, and then click the next button.

9) if prompted that the DNS server is not installed or configured, click the OK button.

10) when DNS is not installed or DNS is not available, the configure DNS page appears, click Yes, install and configure DNS on this computer (recommended), and then click the next button.

11) on the permissions page, click permissions that are compatible with previous versions of windows 2000 servers, and then click the next button.

12) on the Administrator password for Directory Service recovery Model page, type and confirm the administrator password, and then click the next button.

13) on the Summary page, click the next button. When you are finished configuring the active Directory, click the finish button.

14) Click the restart now button for the changes made by the active Directory installation wizard to take effect.

15) Click start, point to programs, point to Administrative tools, and you should see several shortcuts related to domains and active directories in the expanded submenu: domain Security policies, Active Directory domains and Trust relationships, and Active Directory sites and Services.

16) double-click the "network neighbor" icon on the desktop, then double-click "entire network", click "all content", you should see a "directory" entry; double-click "Microsoft Windows network", you should be able to see the NETBIOS name of the domain.

17) right-click the "my computer" icon on the desktop, then select Properties, click "Network ID", and you should be able to see the full computer name and the domain to which it belongs.

Step 2: downgrade the domain controller.

Demote the domain controller to a stand-alone server by removing the active Directory service on the domain controller.

1) Click start, click run, and then type "dcpromo" in the "Open" box of the "run" dialog box.

And click the OK button. On the welcome page, click the next button.

2) when prompted about the global catalog, click the OK button.

3) on the remove Active Directory page, select the check box that this domain controller is a domain controller in this domain, and then click the next button.

4) on the Network credentials page, specify the account with administrative rights to the enterprise by typing the user name, password, and domain name, and then click the next button.

5) on the Administrator password page, type the password for the server administrator, and then click the next button.

6) on the Summary page, click the next button to start configuring the active Directory.

7) after deleting the active Directory, restart the computer so that the settings take effect.

8) double-click the "Network neighbors" icon on the desktop, then double-click "entire Network", click "all content", and you can no longer see the "Directory" item.
