The process of downloading configuration data for fpga devices is often called a burning program. There are three commonly used download file formats, but also corresponding to three download modes.

1. .sof file (static ram of file), which is downloaded directly to the static ram inside the fpga device through the jtag interface. The essence is to determine the generated circuit structure by configuring static ram. When the fpga device is powered off, the program will be lost because the static ram power is not saved, that is, the program will not be saved when the power is off.

2. JIC file (jtag indirect configure file), which is indirectly written to the epcs power-off memory device through the jtag interface. The so-called indirect means that the burning and writing process passes through the fpga device, and the fpga device writes the file to the epcs device connected to it. After power-off, fpga will first read the file configuration of its own internal static ram from the epcs device, and then it will work properly.

3. .pof file (program of file), which is downloaded directly to the external epcs device through as (active serial) active serial mode, without going through the fpga device. The program can still be saved after the power is off.

Summary: the first way is simple and convenient, but the power is not saved, mode 2 and 3 can be power-off to save, the difference is that one is indirectly downloaded to the epcs device, the other is directly downloaded to the epcs device.
