When not to use automatic seed settings

In some cases, automatic seed setting may not be the best choice to initialize a secondary copy. During automatic seed setup, SQL Server performs backups over the network for initialization. This process can be slow if the database is very large or if the secondary copy is a remote copy. The transaction logs of these databases cannot be truncated during the backup process, so if the busy database initialization process is time-consuming, it may result in a significant increase in transaction logs. Before adding a database to an availability group with automatic seed settings, evaluate the database size, load, and site distance between replicas.
