Shulou(Shulou.com)05/31 Report--

In this issue, the editor will bring you about why there is no ASMLIB on RHEL 6. The article is rich in content and analyzes and narrates it from a professional point of view. I hope you can get something after reading this article.

Some people simply explain that Oracle did it on purpose to promote its own Oracle Linux. In fact, this evaluation is unfair.

The particularity of ASMLIB is that it has some Linux Kernel kernel-level components, and whether Kernel is open or not depends entirely on the maintainer of the Kernel kernel. For Red Hat Enterprise Linux, it is Redhat. Since Redhat decided to remove ASMLIB from Kernel from this version of RHEL 6, and no longer gave Oracle access to this part of the kernel code, this directly made it impossible for Oracle to build the ASMLIB version of FOR RHEL 6, so it is obvious that this is the problem of Redhat, not O memory.

Note that ASMLIB is only a Kernel that does not support native RHEL 6, which does not mean that it is impossible to use ASMLIB on RHEL 6. The Metalink documentation describes the relevant information:

What is ASMLib?

ASMLib is a free optional software for Oracle database automatic storage management (ASM) function, which simplifies the management and discovery of ASM disks, and makes the processing of ASM storage and kernel resources more efficient. ASMLib does not need to use the automatic storage management (ASM) feature of the Oracle database on Linux, and all the functions of ASM can be used without ASMLib.

Software update strategy for ASMLib running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Oracle provides ASMLib software and support to customers who receive Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system support from Red Hat and have a valid Oracle database support contract. Each new minor version of RHEL ("update") releases a new Linux kernel that provides only the latest version of ASMLib. For example, if Red Hat releases kernel 2.6. 18-194.0.Oracle will release only the latest version of ASMLib, such as 2.0. 5, for the kernel. Oracle does not release any previous versions of ASMlib for the kernel.

In addition, the ASMLib software is only available for the Linux kernel of the corresponding software package (devel, src, binaries) for Oracle. For example, Oracle cannot provide ASMLib software for the extended update model of Red Hat or for kernels provided under "z-stream" support.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL6)

For RHEL6 or Oracle Linux 6 Oracle, ASMLib software and updates are available only when configuring an unbreakable enterprise kernel (UEK). Oracle does not provide ASMLib packages for kernels distributed by Red Hat as part of RHEL 6 or Red Hat-compatible kernels in Oracle Linux 6. ASMLib updates will be delivered through the indestructible Linux Network (ULN), which is available to customers with Oracle Linux support. ULN can be used for Oracle Linux or Red Hat Linux installations, but the use of ASMlib will require replacing any Red Hat kernel with UEK

For RHEL6, you can still use ASMLIB software and its updates as long as you use Oracle's own Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) kernel, but RHEL6's native Kernel and Redhat-compatible Kernel are not supported. ASMLIB can be updated using Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN), as long as the user has purchased the Oracle Linux Support service. ULN services can be used by either Oracle Linux or Redhat Linux, but ASMlib requires that any Redhat Kernel must be replaced with UEK.

This is why there is no ASMLIB on RHEL 6. If you happen to have similar doubts, you might as well refer to the above analysis to understand. If you want to know more about it, you are welcome to follow the industry information channel.
