Many IT industry laymen and even some industry experts have not been very clear about the concept of database (Database, referred to as DB). Here I will only share my understanding with you.

In Wikipedia, it is said that databases can simply be regarded as electronic filing cabinets-places where electronic documents are stored, and users can add, intercept, update, delete and other operations on the data in the files.

A database refers to a collection of data that is stored together in a certain way, can be shared by multiple users, has as little redundancy as possible, and is independent of the application. This is a purely conceptual description, but it is actually simpler. For example, when we go to a Chinese medicine store, there are rows of drawers behind the doctor. We take the pharmacy to the doctor, and then the doctor opens the corresponding drawer according to the pharmacy and takes out the needed traditional Chinese medicine. The rows of drawers used to store drugs in this process can be understood as databases. The whole process of drug capture can be understood as the process of reading the database.

Databases are usually divided into three types: hierarchical database, network database and relational database. So far, we most often mention relational database and non-relational database.

Among them, relational database is the most commonly used by enterprises, such as Oracle, MySQL, MicrosoftSQL Serve, postgresSQL and so on. Its relational database actually classifies and collates complex data structures, uses one or more two-dimensional tables for data storage, and manages data through different combinations and splices between these tables. This method of storage is suitable for most of our current systems.

On the other hand, non-relational database (NoSQL) contains a variety of database implementations, and most of its principles follow the key-value pair (Key/value) way of storage management. For example, the common ones are: Tokyo Cabinet/Tyrant, Redis, Voldemort, OracleBDB, and redis is usually used for data caching. Of course, non-relational database also contains other logical ways, such as column storage (example: HBase), document database (example: MongoDb), graphical database (example: Neo4J). In fact, non-relational database does not have a unified architecture model, and the gap between two different non-relational databases is much greater than that between two kinds of relational databases, precisely because of the diversity of non-relational databases. Therefore, it is more suitable for the use of specific scenes, it can deal with a large amount of data, and it is very suitable for the current big data trend.

The current era happens to be in an era of rapid development, the current development of big data, cloud computing, Internet of things, Internet and other technologies, these new technologies and applications are inseparable from the support of data, and as a carrier of data storage, database is also developing at a high speed, such as the eighth major version released by MySQL this year and version 9.6 released by postgreSQL. Have been developing towards the trend of the times. For both our technicians and non-technical personnel, it is very necessary to understand the technology at the forefront of the current technological trend.
