The creative new features introduced in Rancher 2.2 GA will further enable Kubernetes-as-a-service, enabling business users to focus on accelerating innovation and driving business value.

Rancher Labs, a leading provider of container management software, officially released Rancher 2.2 GA on March 26th, 2019. The creative new features in Rancher 2.2 will greatly simplify the configuration and management of enterprise Kubernetes by IT operators, while giving enterprise IT developers more control over their applications. With Rancher 2.2, an enterprise's IT team can significantly reduce infrastructure concerns and focus more on accelerating innovation and driving business value.

"with the exponential growth of Kubernetes adoption, enterprise IT personnel have been looking for a simple, reliable and repeatable way to configure, manage and support enterprise Kubernetes clusters, and more and more enterprise Kubernetes clusters are deployed across local and cloud environments," said Liang Sheng, co-founder and CEO of Rancher Labs. "there are a number of features in the official version of Rancher 2.2 to meet these requirements, including etcd automatic backup and recovery for disaster recovery and recovery, a multi-tenant application directory to improve the privacy of sensitive projects, and Global DNS capabilities that provide high availability for applications across multiple clusters."

Simplify Kubernetes and accelerate enterprise innovation in hybrid cloud scenarios

Rancher version 2.2 GA is by far the most important product version of Rancher Labs, and features such as support for multi-cluster applications and integrated Prometheus advanced monitoring have been released in the previously released version of the 2.2 technology preview. The main new feature highlights of Rancher 2.2 GA include:

Rancher Global DNS

Disaster preparedness and recovery of cluster

Advanced monitoring function of multi-cluster and multi-tenant

Deployment and management of a single application across multiple Kubernetes clusters

Multi-tenant application directory

Rancher Global DNS

I'm sure no one would like to automate the deployment of applications and then manually add or change DNS records. Rancher Global DNS can configure and maintain external DNS records corresponding to the IP address of the application's Kubernetes Ingress, thus solving the above problems. This is not a novel concept in itself, but the innovation of Rancher is that it can do this for applications deployed in multiple clusters.

Users can now deploy applications to any number of clusters as needed and have DNS update automatically to point to the application portals of all clusters. Rancher will provide public access to applications deployed in multiple clusters or multiple projects in the same cluster by automatically programming the hostname of the service to the public DNS. This release includes support for Route53 and AliDNS, as well as alpha support for CloudFlare. Support for other providers is also under development and will be available in subsequent small version updates.

Disaster preparedness and recovery of cluster

Rancher 2.2 adds backup and restore support for etcd datastores directly in Rancher UI/API and Kubernetes API. Rancher performs scheduled and temporary backups of etcd from Rancher UI/API or Kubernetes API to local storage, NFS, or any S3-compatible object library. It is worth mentioning here that Rancher 2.2 supports S3-compliant storage as a terminal, so users can get backups from the host immediately without using NFS. When an unexpected situation occurs, users can simply and quickly restore these backups directly to the cluster through UI.

Advanced monitoring function of multi-cluster and multi-tenant

A major feature of Rancher is single-cluster multi-tenancy, where one or more users can access a Project and can only view resources within that Project, even if there are other users or other Project in the cluster. Rancher has been using Prometheus for monitoring and alarms. In Rancher 2.2, monitoring is further enhanced and is the only solution that supports Prometheus in a multi-cluster, multi-tenant environment.

In the Rancher 2.2 GA release, the advanced monitoring feature of Rancher deploys Prometheus and Grafana in a manner that respects the boundaries of a multi-tenant environment. Grafana installs pre-built clusters and project dashboards. Users only need to select the appropriate check box to activate advanced metrics and view valid charts in a few minutes.

Rancher's monitoring covers everything from the cluster nodes in each project to the Pod, and if the application exposes its own metrics, Prometheus will grab the content and make it available to users.

Multi-cluster application

Rancher is created for multi-cluster management, and it integrates strongly with Helm through its own application directory (Catalog). Rancher's Catalog takes Helm's key / value YAML and converts it into a form that is intuitive, simple, and quick for anyone to use.

In Rancher2.2, the application directory also exists at the global level, and you can seamlessly deploy your application to multiple Project in any number of clusters through Helm. This saves a lot of time for people who need to maintain applications in different environments, especially when upgrading all of these applications, Rancher will use Helm's atomic releases feature to bulk upgrade and roll back.

Because multi-cluster applications are built on top of Helm, they can also be used out of the box with CI/CD systems or any other automatic configuration program.

Multi-tenant application directory

In earlier versions of Rancher, the configuration of the application directory and any external Helm repository existed at the global level and then propagated to the cluster. This means that each cluster can access the same Helm chart, which is valid for most installations, but not for all cases.

Rancher 2.2 provides cluster-and project-specific configurations for application directories. Users can delete it completely, change what is accessible to a specific cluster or project, or add new Helm repositories for applications that are approved by the user.

With a multi-tenant application directory, users can isolate the application directory by cluster or project. With this finer isolation, even the name of the application cannot be shared across projects.

Everything is open source, welcome to use

All the features of Rancher 2.2 focus on reliability, repeatability, and ease of use to help enterprise IT personnel accelerate innovation and bring value to the enterprise business.

Adhering to the open source concept as always, you are welcome to download and use Rancher 2.2 at Docker Hub:
