Traditional service (SOA) and micro-service (Micro Service) are not mutually exclusive, on the contrary, they are integrated.

The Wealth of Nations and the organizational structure of IT Enterprises

Adam Smith, the originator of economics, in his work on the Wealth of Nations, the first chapter is on the division of labor. Adam Smith believes that the role of division of labor is to promote labor productivity, improve labor operation proficiency, strengthen labor skills, and enhance labor judgment.

Since the division of labor is reasonable and the enterprise also adopts the theory of division of labor, then according to the different industries and the different scale of customers served by the IT enterprise, there must be a division of departments suitable for the enterprise itself, and each department will perform its own duties and cooperate with each other.

The form of organizational Communication and the expression of Software Design

Conway's law is well known, and its general meaning is that the form of organization is equivalent to system design.

Service-oriented and micro-service are actually the expression of organizational form.

Enterprises or organizations that make good use of service-oriented or micro-services are bound to be "service-oriented" in their organizational form. Each unit organization is actually responsible for the life cycle of one or more systems.

For example, Chestnut, the enterprise has set up two organizational departments An and B, which are respectively responsible for the life cycle of two software products, from product design to on-line operation and maintenance, product improvement to the final product demise or replacement. Each organizational department has a complete team system, including product designers, developers, testing, and so on. Of course, for the need of safety or efficiency, some functions are supported by public service organizations, such as operation and maintenance, training and so on. Although it is the service provided by the public service organization, the public service organization still gives customized special services to the differences between An and B to a certain extent. In this way, organizations An and B can provide services to the outside world smoothly, and the whole enterprise will become SOA.

Micro services are relative.

According to the author's actual observation, the traditional SOA method can work well in an IT organization with thousands of technical practitioners. Each software product can be well developed, maintained and improved, and the products cooperate well to provide services to external customers. IT enterprises of this size have thousands of software products, or services, each of which is responsible for by a small team that is almost fully armed, and several small teams form R & D centers. From the perspective of IT enterprises, there is SOA between R & D centers, but at the small team level, isn't this a "micro-service"?
