Cause of failure

This problem occurs because of a problem with the file identification number in the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Solution method

Click "start" → "run". In the Open box, enter cmd, and then click the OK button. As shown in figure 1:

In the Command prompt window, enter net stop wuauserv, and then press the Enter key to stop the Automatic Updates service. As shown in figure 2, enter "net stop wuauserv":

Continue to enter "rmdir / s% windir%softwaredistributionwuredir" at the command prompt in figure 2 and press the "Enter" key. Enter "Y" and press the "Enter" key. As shown in figure 3, enter "Y":

Finally, enter "net start wuauserv" and press the "Enter" key to start the Automatic Updates service. As shown in figure 4, enter "net start wuauserv":
