1What is the Tungsten Fabric?

Tungsten Fabric, formerly known as OpenContrail, was originally an extensible, multi-cloud network platform open source by Juniper, with a vibrant community of developers and end users. The transfer to Linux Foundation was completed in March 2018, and its name was officially changed to Tungsten Fabric.

2. Why do we need Tungsten Fabric?

SDN is a key technology in the dynamic and intelligent network roadmap, both within and between data centers, including extending to multiple cloud environments and branch offices across wide area (SD-WAN). The emergence of SDN and NFV technology has laid the foundation for the establishment of a network with expected demand for end users, as well as dynamic and centralized control over service providers or enterprises. Tungsten Fabric provides a single point of control, visibility and management of network and security for different types of data center or multi-cloud deployments, taking SDN technology to a new level, including

Provide consistent network capabilities and enforce security policies for orchestrating different types of workloads (virtual machines, containers, bare metal) using different choreographers (OpenStack, Kubernetes, VMware, etc.)

Provide production-level networking and security stacks for data center and public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) and Edge cloud deployment

Tungsten Fabric has evolved into a SDN software-defined networking framework to provide SDN solutions for Telco Cloud and NFV use cases.

3, the mission and scope of the community

The Tungsten Fabric project is an open source project protocol that is developed based on standard protocols and provides all the components necessary for network virtualization and network security. The components of the project include: SDN controller, virtual router, analysis engine, northbound API release, hardware integration functions, cloud orchestration software and extensive REST API.

The mission of the project is to facilitate the development, development and adoption of the Tungsten Fabric Project code base to achieve a comprehensive network and security architecture that includes a variety of open source ecosystems, including virtual machine-based public and private clouds, container-based clouds and ecosystems, and other computing platforms. The goal of the community is to maintain and improve the production readiness and scalability of the project, while accelerating development and attracting more developers and users to the platform.

The scope of the project includes development support for the Tungsten Fabric code base supported by OSI-approved open source licenses, including documentation, testing, integration, and the creation of other components that help develop, deploy, operate, or use.

4. What role will the Chinese community play?

Tungsten Fabric Chinese Community is initiated spontaneously by a group of Chinese volunteers who follow and love SDN, including technology veterans, market veterans, industry experts and experienced users.

It will serve as a bridge between the community and China, disseminate information, submit questions, organize activities, and unite all forces interested in the multi-cloud Internet to effectively solve the problems encountered in the process of cloud network construction.
