2. Host system requirements of Workstation Pro

The physical machine used to install Workstation Pro is called the host system, and the installed operating system is called the host operating system. To run Workstation Pro, the host system and host operating system must meet specific hardware and software requirements.

(1) processor requirements of the host system

The following host systems are supported.

Systems that use processors released in 2011 or later, except for systems that use the following processors.

Intel Atom processor based on the 2011 Bonnell microarchitecture. For example, Atom Z670/Z650 and Atom N570.

Intel Atom processor based on 2012 Saltwell microarchitecture. For example, Atom S1200, Atom D2700/D2500, and Atom N2800/N2600.

AMD processor based on Llano and Bobcat microarchitecture.

A system that uses the following processors.

Intel processors based on the 2010 Westmere microarchitecture. For example, Xeon 5600, Xeon 3600, Core i7-970, Core i7-980, and Core i7-990.

Processor requirements for 64-bit client operating systems

For a supported processor to run a 64-bit client operating system, the host system must use one of the following processors.

AMD CPU with AMD-V support

Intel CPU with VT-x support

If you are using Intel CPU with VT-x support, you must verify that VT-x support is enabled in the host system BIOS. The BIOS settings required to enable VT-x support vary from system vendor to system vendor. When installing a 64-bit operating system, Workstation Pro checks to ensure that the host system has a supported processor. If the host system does not meet the processor requirements, you will not be able to install a 64-bit operating system.

(2), supported host operating system

You can install Workstation Pro in Windows and Linux host operating systems.

(3) memory requirements of the host system

The host system must have sufficient memory to run the host operating system, the client operating system running in the virtual machine of the host system, and the applications running in the host and client operating systems.

The host system needs to have at least 2 GB of memory. It is recommended to have 4 GB or more.

To provide Windows 7 Aero graphics support in a virtual machine, at least 3 GB host system memory is required. 1 GB of memory is allocated to the client operating system and 256 MB is allocated to graphics memory.

(4) display requirements of the host system

The host system must have a 16-bit or 32-bit display adapter. Use the latest graphics driver recommended for the host system.

To support Windows 7 Aero graphics, the host system should use NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT or later GPUs, or ATI Radeon HD 2600 or later GPUs.

The host system must meet some disk drive requirements. The client operating system can reside in a physical disk partition or a virtual disk file.

Solid state drive

If the host has physical solid state drives (Solid State Drive, SSD), the host informs the client operating system that they are running on the SSD.

(6) Local area network connection requirements of host system

You can use any Ethernet controller supported by the host operating system.

To provide non-Ethernet network support, you need to use built-in Network address Translation (NAT) or host-only mode network connection and routing software on the host operating system.

(7), ALSA requirements

To use ALSA in a virtual machine, the host system must meet specific requirements.

The version of the ALSA library on the host system must be 1.0.16 or later.

The sound card in the host system must support ALSA. The ALSA project website provides an up-to-date list of sound cards and chipsets that support ALSA.

The sound device in the host system cannot be muted.

The current user must have the appropriate permissions to use the sound device.

3. Virtual machine network connection support

Virtual machines support specific Ethernet switches and network connection protocols.

In the Windows host operating system, up to 10 virtual Ethernet switches are supported. In the Linux host operating system, up to 255virtual Ethernet switches are supported.

By default, three switches are configured for bridging mode network connections, host-only mode network connections, and NAT mode network connections.

Supports most Ethernet-based protocols, including TCP/IP, NetBEUI, Microsoft Networking, Samba, Novell NetWare, and Network File system (NFS).

The built-in NAT mode network connection supports client software using TCP/IP, FTP, DNS, HTTP, and Telnet. VPN is also supported to implement PPTP over NAT. NFS).
