Simple Scan

One of my favorites, Simple Scan is small, fast, efficient and easy to use. If you've seen it before, it's because simple scanning is the default scanner application on the GNOME desktop, as well as the default scanner for many Linux distributions.

Scan a document or photo with just one click. After scanning, you can rotate or crop it and save it as an image (JPEG or PNG only) or PDF format. In other words, even if you scan a document at a lower resolution, a simple scan can be slow. Most importantly, simple scans are scanned using a set of global default values, such as 150 dpi for text scanning and 300 dpi for photo scanning. You need to go to the preferences for simple scanning to change these settings.

If you have scanned more than a few pages, you can reorder the pages before saving them. If necessary-for example, if you submit a signature form-you can send an email in a simple scan.

Skanlite

In many ways, Skanlite is the cousin of simple scanning in the KDE world. Skanite has few features, but it does a good job.

The software has options that you can configure, including automatically saving the scan file, setting the scan quality, and determining where to save the scan. Skanite can be saved to these image formats: JPEG, PNG, BMP, PPM, XBM, and XPM.

A good feature is that the software can save some of the files you have scanned. This is useful when you want to remove someone or something from a picture.

Gscan2pdf

Another old favorite, gscan2pdf, may show its history, but it still has a little more functionality than some of the other applications mentioned here. Even so, gscan2pdf is still relatively light.

In addition to saving scans in various image formats (JPEG, PNG, and TIFF), gscan2pdf also saves scans as PDF or DjVu files. You can set the scan resolution, whether in black and white or color, as well as the paper size before clicking the scan button. This is better than going into gscan2pdf preferences every time you want to change any of these settings. You can also rotate, crop, and delete pages.

Although none of these features are really lethal, they give you more flexibility.

You may know GIMP as an image editing tool. But did you know that you can use it to drive your scanner?

You need to install XSane scanner software and the GIMP XSane plug-in. Both of these should be available from the package manager of the Linux distribution. There, select File > Create > Scaner/Camera. From there, click on your scanner, and then click the scan button.

If this is not your tea, or if it doesn't work, you can put GIMP and one named QuiteInsane. With these two plug-ins, GIMP will become a powerful scanning application that allows you to set many options, such as whether to scan in color or black and white, the resolution of the scan, and whether to compress the results. You can also use GIMP tools to retouch or apply effects to your scans. This makes it great for scanning photos and art.

Did they really work?

All of this software works in most cases and can use a variety of hardware. I've been using them on multi-function printers for years-whether they're connected with a USB cable or wirelessly.
