The pfSense2.4 version is about to be released, and pfsense is the most widely used open source firewall. The pfsense2.4 version is a completely new version, and here is a brief description of the highlights of this version. For a complete list of features, please visit our Wikipedia.

Redesigned landing page!

The login page of pfsense hasn't changed much over the years, and we changed it this time. Users can customize the background color to more easily identify different hosts. In addition to the new login page, the pfSense logo has also been modified to meet the needs of the company's development. Please click here for more information.

WebGUI improvement

Leading the development of the network and security areas requires the pfSense team to spend more time considering changes in underlying technologies, tools, and use cases. It is necessary to transfer GUI to Bootstrap in pfSense 2.3 so that it can more easily support different screen sizes and provide users with higher security. PfSense2.4, further improved and optimized WebGUI, the navigation bar is more intuitive, allowing more control over previously visited pages. The page is more organized and provides more detailed information.

Speed up of Open × × 2.4.3 and AES-NI

PfSense 2.4 brings many improvements and the latest security patches, such as the latest Open × × 2.4.3. Now Open × × on pfsense can use AES-NI to accelerate AES-GCM tunnels, increasing tunnel traffic throughput by up to 30% to up to 50%.

Multilingual support

PfSense 2.4 has 9 different languages! More than 250 volunteers have joined the pfsense multilingual project, which has now been translated into eight languages, with more coming soon! We are very grateful to every volunteer to help us with the translation! X86 32-bit and NanoBSD are no longer supported

As early as November 16, 2016, we announced the end of Intel x86 32-bit system support. Intel has stopped selling 32-bit systems for many years. Now great changes have taken place in technology, and low-power processors can provide a faster experience at lower cost. It is also imperative that we stop developing, testing, and supporting 32-bit Intel systems. For similar reasons, we no longer support NanoBSD images since pfSense 2.4.

Support ARM architecture!

With the arrival of SG-1000 microFirewall, pfSense officially supports the ARM architecture! This is a huge task, which enables us to expand our ARM family in the near future. All related ARM work is a contribution to FreeBSD. We would also like to thank all those who bought SG-1000 for helping us complete the development of ARM. Our SG-1000 is only our first ARM device, and we are developing a second ARM device, the SG-3100 that we launched in May.

New installation method

As part of our technical assessment, we want to simplify the development and testing process, and we have switched to the standard FreeBSD installer since pfSense 2.4. This means that the installation process is slightly different, but it is still easy to operate. This also means that there are more options during the installation process, such as the ability to install pfSense on the ZFS file system to improve reliability.

FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE and ZFS

PfSense 2.4 runs on the FreeBSD version of 11.0-RELEASE, with many improvements in security and stability. With the release of pfSense2.4, pfSense now officially supports ZFS! ZFS is a widely used advanced file system. The ZFS file system can be selected in a pfSense installation.

There are more changes!

In addition to these changes, there are many other improvements, such as a new wireless stack, signing CSR in the certificate manager, automatically alleviating XSS*** 's work, and completely rewriting IPFW code for Captive portals! For a complete list of changes, please visit here.
