This is the beginning of a new month, and Valve has just updated its Steam hardware survey to give us an update on the millions of systems that have Steam installed. The latest survey shows that AMD's CPU market share has seen an interesting decline, falling to its lowest point in 2021.

Valve's Steam hardware survey is not entirely a scientific tracker of processor market share. The survey relies on the participation of millions of volunteers to provide data about their rigs, which Valve processes every month. However, it is still a good way to gain insight into market volatility and consumer spending.

According to the August report, released on September 1st, there have been some interesting developments in CPU's market share in terms of ownership. AMD fell 1.88% in August, and the latest figure is now 27.31%, down from 29.19% in July. The 1.88% drop may not seem like much, but if all the millions of PC surveyed are taken into account, there could be more than 100000 systems. 27.31%, which is the lowest point in AMD history in 2021.

Before drawing any conclusions, we must note that the survey does not publish detailed collected statistics and is far from transparent about the sources of the figures. There is also a certain margin of error in any survey (usually at least a few percent), so it may just be an "unlucky" month for sampled users. It may also mean that consumers are just buying more competitive products from Intel. Either way, this is where the data are, and we will see whether AMD's share continues to decline or return to upward trajectory in the coming months.
