II. IO Meter testing IO Meter

A performance testing software that is widely used in the storage field, enterprise users relatively approve of the results run through the software; in addition, the software is relatively simple to operate, running on Windows 2008 Universe 2012, graphical interface management

According to official instructions, generally complex large environments do not write more than 30%, and more than 70% of them are basically reading. Only test 4K 30% write / 70% read / 100% random. However, in order to squeeze the maximum performance of VSAN, other different tests are also carried out.

The results show that:

In a random test of 4k, 30% write and 70% read, the overall performance of VSAN is about 70% of that of Cisco's super-converged architecture.

In the 4K 100% read test, the performance of the two is similar.

Delay:

Thanks to Cisco's unique network technology, Cisco's response time is lower than that of VSAN.

The overall results show that:

The performance of the Cisco platform is excellent, but VSAN's storage performance as pure software is not poor.

3. VMware HCI Bench testing VMware HCI Bench

This is a tool for mass deployment of virtual machines to verify the IOPS and throughput, latency, CPU footprint and memory footprint involved in deploying multiple virtual machines at the same time

Deploy 20 virtual machines over HCIBench, distributed across 5 VSAN nodes. The software records the creation of 20 VM, which is used to analyze the efficiency of establishing virtual machines.

4. Analysis of test results

IO Meter: because the five VSAN clusters benefit from the cache processing of PCI solid state drives, the overall performance has reached 70% of that of the Cisco platform.

HCI Bench: a total of analysis with VMWARE engineers, because there are only 3 Cisco nodes and 5 VSAN clusters, the theory is that the more nodes, the higher the efficiency of IO. The IO of solid HCI Benmark is higher than that of Cisco, but because the network of Cisco platform is optimized, it can be seen that the latency of Cisco platform is relatively low and the performance is excellent. It is tested here that because each machine in the VSAN cluster is configured with only one CPU and Cisco has two each, the overall CPU footprint is higher than that of the Cisco super-convergence platform.

VSAN does not need to configure the management virtual machine on each machine in the cluster like Cisco, it only needs to turn on this function in the software to use, which is simple and convenient to maintain. Cisco integrates the advantages of its own network hardware, resulting in low latency and high efficiency of the entire IO. And Cisco can not compare with VSAN in de-stress, VSAN needs all-flash memory to achieve, but Cisco can achieve it in the case of 1 solid state. The test results show that, although the overall performance of VSAN is better than that of CSI super-convergence platform, it can meet the use of server virtual machine and desktop virtualization.

If the company virtualizes (servers, desktops) in the future, VSAN is a good choice.
