1.1.1 connecting using USB

Beaglebone Black has built drivers and help pages into the operating system, which makes it easy for you to connect Beaglebone Black to your computer. The latest version of Beaglebone Black, which has 4GB eMMC flash memory, is pre-installed with the Debian operating system and does not require a system Micro SD card like Beaglebone.

Using the USB connection is very simple and straightforward. Plug one end of the Mini USB cable into the Mini USB port of the Beaglebone Black and the other end into the USB port of your computer, as shown in figure 1.1.

This causes the Beaglebone Black board to start, and of course provides a development interface for you to program. Beaglebone Black launches Debian OS from the onboard eMMC. When the Beaglebone Black is powered on, the power supply LED (next to the 5V barrel socket) lights up and the 4 LED above the Mini USB Jack starts flashing. These four LED are called USER LED, and their functions can be configured by users. By default, they are configured with the following functions:

Q USR0 is configured for "heartbeat mode" and flashes at a fixed frequency as long as the system is running

Q USR1 is configured to flash when accessing the Micro SD card

Q USR2 is configured to flash when CPU is active

Q USR3 is configured to flash when accessing eMMC.
