Bian Shaw found that many friends were interested in Samsung Chromebook Pro's brief confusion about Linux. Bian Shaw sorted out some relevant information for Samsung Chromebook Pro and shared it with you here.

It is reported that the developer version of Samsung Chromebook Pro's Chrome OS has provided brief support for Linux apps. According to Lord Redditor 'u/morphos, this feature seems to be specifically enabled in Chrome OS 82. However, Linux support does not seem to work in earlier versions of the operating system on the same device. It also doesn't work in version 83, which is still under development.

Reddit users do notice that experimental Chrome features found on the website "Chrome: / flags" may require tags. This is a symbol labeled "# enable-Lab-Kernel-Virtual Machine-support".

This flag enables an older pilot project that was previously used to enable a pilot project called "kernelnext". This project pushes Chrome OS into the Linux kernel 4.19. For clarity, Samsung's Chromebook Pro starts with the Linux kernel 3.18. To run a Linux application in Chrome OS, you need to use a previous kernel or a newer kernel.

Why did Linux's support for Chromebook Pro disappear?

Kernelnext has been around for some time now. The goal is to achieve equivalence between existing Chromebook at startup. Specifically, it can be traced back to Google Chromebook Pixel in 2015 and even earlier gadgets. In fact, if it appears on Samsung Chromebook Pro, it means that Samsung's leading Chromebook at the time can finally run Linux apps.

In the development channel of the operating system, an update to the available kernel usually means that new features are about to be released. User-unfriendly distribution channels are often used to test incoming functionality. At first glance, this does not seem to be the case here. But it may still be too late.

That's because Chrome OS 82 will never get out. Google officially skipped this version when it decided to restore Chrome updates in late March. Until then, updates to Chrome OS have been paused. Therefore, the next version after Chrome OS 81 will be Chrome OS 83.

When will Chrome 83 arrive?

According to Google, Chrome OS 83 will include all firmware updates expected in version 82 and later. This means that it should be possible to add Linux support to Samsung Chromebook Pro. It may not appear in version 83 because it has not been added. Google has been operating effectively, but it is actually a backbone team. Therefore, this cannot be ruled out.

On the contrary, if Google decides that this feature will not be juxtaposed with other upcoming changes, it may appear in the future.

At present, Chrome 83 is tentatively scheduled to go public on May 19th. However, Chromebook variants with updated operating systems will not be released until some time after May 26. In addition, as mentioned above, Samsung Chromebook Pro's Linux support may not come at that time.

Now, due to the increasing uncertainty of Chrome updates, this feature may be released much later. With Chrome OS 84, you won't be able to log in to Samsung Chromebook until July 21. Updating Chrome or later will push Linux support for Samsung Chromebook until September.
