The TTL index (time-to-live index) allows you to set a timeout for each document, after which the document will be deleted.

You can create an TTL index by specifying the expireAfterSecs option in ensureIndex:

> db.foo.ensureIndex ({"lastUpdated": 1}, {"expireAfterSecs": 60,60,24})

The above command creates a TTL index on the lastUpdated field of the collection foo. If the lastUpdated field of the document is of date type, the document will be deleted when the time of the server is 24 hours later than that in the lastUpdated field of the document.

After the TTL is established, you can use the collMod command to modify the timeout of the TTL index:

> db.runCommand ({"collMod": "indexName", "lastUpdated": 3600)
