At Dell Technology Conference 2018 (Dell Technologies World 2018), Dell EMC unveiled two newly upgraded Super converged Infrastructure (HCI) products: VxRail; integrated with VMware's vSAN and vSphere virtualization software, and VxRack SDDC integrated with VMware Cloud Foundation 2.3 and cloud management and automation software for local IT as a service (on-premises IT-as-a- service). Dell EMC says the upgraded system will be more flexible and powerful.

In addition, Dell has introduced two enhanced versions of PowerEdge servers, both of which run Intel's latest FPGA products to run the enterprise's most important applications, especially analytics, faster and more efficiently.

Continue to lead the market with two super fusion systems

Dell HCI is part of the company's strategy to accelerate enterprise multi-cloud applications in a VMware environment. On the other hand, this is part of Dell's broader plan to move from the edge to the core data center, from the core data center to the cloud.

According to a spokesman for the company, the two Dell HCI systems contain a number of PowerEdge 14th generation components. The VxRail system has an updated NVMe cache driver with a NVIDIA P40 graphics processing card for data-intensive workloads and provides a 25 GbE network function. VxRack SDDC integrates computing, storage, and network virtualization into a separate software stack and can run as a private cloud or as a service in a public cloud.

VxRail has begun to supply, and the basic price of a three-node cluster is $25000.

Eric Sheppard, an analyst at IDC, said that the super-converged market remains the fastest-growing segment of the converged systems market, and its tighter integration technology could have a significant impact on the larger cloud ecosystem.

According to data from a market analysis company, the industry revenue of super-converged systems reached $3.7 billion by 2017, an increase of 64% over 2016, and is expected to exceed $10 billion by 2022.

In the fourth quarter of 2017, IDC rated Dell as the market leader in HCI, with revenue of $346.8 million and a market share of 27.8%, followed by Nutanix with a market capitalization of $243 million or 19.5%. HPE and Cisco tied for third place with $61.6 million and $56.3 million, respectively, with 4.9% and 4.5% market share.

Dell continues to enter the super-integration market this year, and at present, with the support of its strong strength, the company is likely to continue to lead the market. As for the performance of these two products, it is also more anticipated.

Release new PowerEdge servers for AI and ML applications

In addition, the announced PowerEdge R940xa and PowerEdge R840 have four sockets to support Intel XEON processors-R940xa also contains four GPU-- and can be expanded to 112 processor cores and 6TB memory. The systems will be available on May 22, but pricing is unclear.

Ravi Pentaconti, senior vice president of product management for Dell Server and Infrastructure Systems, said, "they all eventually need to figure out how to use machine learning methods for analysis to drive their business. These systems can help them achieve this goal."

Although many customers want to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning into new or existing business processes, if the price is too high, some users may hesitate to buy these high-priced servers to support those AI-based projects. Of course, these two servers may be favored by more IaaS cloud service providers.
