In this example, WSUS will use an existing SQL Server within the enterprise as the WSUS database server, so you only need to install WSUS's WSUS services and database components during the installation process. In addition, you need to specify a storage location for the update during installation, so we need to prepare a disk or partition volume with at least 6GB space in advance and manually create a directory to store the update data, such as WSUSDatas. Since we use a separate SQL Server as the database server for WSUS, we also need to configure the database during the installation process, and the domain account that currently installs WSUS should have the required permissions on SQL Server. If the permissions are improper, or if the database component is not selected during the installation, the installation will fail, and we can see the following record in the installation log:

"2014-01-09 15:17:37 Generation of encryption key to save to the database failed. Error=System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): unable to open the database" SUSDB "requested by login. Login failed. User 'contoso\ wsusadmin' login failed."

After completing the installation of WSUS, it will be set up for the first time, and the process is not much different from the previous version. I will not repeat it, please see the screenshot below!

Most of the WSUS settings will be completed during the installation process, and we can modify them later through the WSUS console.

For this example, before Microsoft shuts down the Windows XP update service, we can find the "products and categories" option in the options in the WSUS console, check only Windows XP in the products tab, and check all categories in the categories tab.
