Rancher 2.1 has been fully released in recent days!

Rancher 2.1 is the most significant version update since Rancher Labs fully embraced Kubernetes last September and released a new milestone product, Rancher 2.0, the open source enterprise Kubernetes management platform.

In September 2017, Rancher Labs prospectively became one of the first container management platform providers in the industry to fully embrace Kubernetes. The new milestone product Rancher 2.0 is an open source enterprise Kubernetes management platform that provides Kubernetes-as-a-Service (Kubernetes as a service) to enterprise users.

Rancher 2.1builds on the success of Rancher 2.0and introduces the next generation of automated cluster operations and application management capabilities, and provides users with a migration path from Rancher's Cattle orchestration to Rancher Kubernetes. Rancher 2.1provides all the key functions that enterprises need to easily adopt and manage Kubernetes within their organizations.

Optimize Kubernetes cluster operation and maintenance

Rancher 2.1greatly enhances scalability and allows users to define and manage Kubernetes clusters using Rancher. In addition, Rancher 2.1 allows users to take snapshots and export the complete configuration of the Kubernetes cluster managed by Rancher, and later restore the Kubernetes cluster by importing the same configuration file.

More authentication methods

Rancher now integrates PingID, Microsoft Active Directory federation server, OpenLDAP, Keycloak, FreeIPA, and Azure Active Directory.

Dispelling container function

When maintaining the host, such as upgrading the kernel, hardware maintenance, etc., this function will first prohibit the scheduling of new containers to this node, and then disperse the containers on the node regularly. After the mainframe maintenance is completed, the node function can be restored.

Project quota management

Cluster administrators and project administrators can set quotas at the project level. You can configure quotas for the project's CPU, memory, storage, number of Pod, and so on. At the same time, in each project, the administrator can also control the quota for each namespace.

Stronger application management capabilities

Rancher 2.1adds optimization support for helm chart, and optimizes ingress management, log collection and alarm functions.

Enhanced function of CICD

Rancher 2.1 greatly optimizes the user experience of CICD, including fully integrated CI / CD features that can be used with Kubernetes to open the whole process of code submission, automatic testing, automatic construction of images, and automatic deployment of images.

Support for GitLab

Rancher 2.1adds GitLab support for Rancher CI / CD, and CICD can support the docking of public GitLab and private GitLab code base.

Extended command line interface (CLI)

Teams can now automate their interfaces with Rancher and Kubernetes.

High availability Mode Enhancement

Administrators can configure multiple Rancher Server instances to be enabled in high availability mode. It provides the ability to expand the capacity of Rancher services horizontally and improves the availability of Rancher Server.

Application Store Optimization and Enhancement

Rancher 2.1introduces Tiller, better optimizes the app store, and adds one-click deployment of applications such as Kubernetes Dashboard. And now users can set the application parameters in the form of editing YAML.

Migrate from Rancher 1.6to Rancher 2.x

Rancher 2.1 is also an upgraded version for Rancher 1.6 users. Rancher 2.1 includes a migration path for users to migrate from Rancher's Cattle orchestration to Rancher Kubernetes. Rancher 2.1also provides integrated tools for analyzing Rancher Compose files and outlines how users can migrate applications directly to Kubernetes.
