Install hardware and softwar

With network equipment and raspberry pie, you need to install Pi-hole in the Linux container or in a supported operating system. There are several ways to install it, but an easy one is to execute the following command on your raspberry pie:

Each device is different, so I can't tell you exactly what you need to click to adjust the settings. Generally speaking, you can access your router through a browser. The address of your router is sometimes printed at the bottom of the router, starting with 192.168 or 10.

In the browser, open the address of your router and log in with your credentials. It is usually a simple admin and a numeric password (which is sometimes printed on the router). If you do not know the login name, please call your supplier and ask for details.

In the graphical interface, look for the DHCP section of your local area network and deactivate the DHCP server. Your router interface will almost certainly be different from mine, but this is an example of my setup. Uncheck the DHCP server:

Next, you must activate the DHCP server on Pi-hole. If you don't, your device will not be able to surf the Internet unless you assign an IP address manually!

Make your network suitable for your family

The setup is complete. Now, your network devices (such as phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) will automatically find the DHCP server on the raspberry pie. Each device will then be assigned a dynamic IP address to access the Internet.

Note: if your router device supports setting up a DNS server, you can also configure the DNS client in the router. The client will use Pi-hole as your DNS server.

To set rules for which websites and activities your child can visit, open a browser to go to the Pi-hole management page, http://pi.hole/admin/. On the dashboard, click "Whitelist" to add pages that your child can visit. You can also add sites that children are not allowed to visit (such as games, adults, advertising, shopping, etc.) to "Blocklist".
