Windows hosting services will be integrated into zEnterprise

IBM said it would adjust one of its mainframe platforms by the end of this year to support hosting services on Microsoft's Windows system.

In an article published last week entitled "zEnterprise will support Microsoft Windows," IBM said, "in the fourth quarter of 2011, IBM will select a set of zEnterprise blade server 002 extensions based on IBM x-series systems to provide support for Microsoft Windows."

However, he added, "this does not mean that IBM's plan to enable its zEnterprise to support Windows systems is incomplete. Instead, IBM is taking advantage of its consistent strong combination of strong technology and sophisticated services to provide users with a solution to run Windows on their x-system blades and integrate it into zEnterprise as a whole."

Kernocahn also talked about the value of integrating Windows,Linux and IBM's z operating system into the host operating system.

"if we can simulate the Windows system well enough on Linux or Linux-enabled blade servers, we will be able to support most applications in Windows environments at the same time when it is necessary to increase the server size (Unix/Linux and / or host)," he wrote.

Third-party vendors will launch tools to match Windows virtual machines "only as another set of systems for backup / recovery, monitoring, managing load balancing and creating distributed applications," Kernochan wrote. Such tools may not be available in 2011, but "despite the limitations, IBM promises that support for Windows systems will immediately have a positive impact on server applications in many organizations," he wrote.

IBM said in an announcement that the x system based on Linux architecture will be available in zEnterprise in the third quarter of 2011. At the beginning of designing this system, IBM did not consider adding support for the Windows platform, but according to the feedback of customers, they changed their design ideas.
