Jaguar is releasing a software update for its first electric car, the I-Pace, which will add 12 miles to the SUV's range. The British carmaker said it could squeeze more mileage out of the 90kWh battery pack of the electric SUV, in part because of lessons learned from the second quarter of the I-Pace racing series, which began last month. The EPA estimates that the I-Pace will have a range of 234 miles before being updated after it is fully charged. However, after the update, in some cases, the I-Pace will be able to travel 246 miles.

The increase could be good news for car owners who have invested at least $70, 000 in I-Pace. Jaguar even called it an "early holiday gift" in its latest press release, which helped boost the confidence of potential buyers. However, unlike Tesla's software update, Tesla's software update can be reached automatically in the air (and often needs to be started), and current I-Pace owners will have to bring their own SUV to Jaguar dealers to upgrade. (Jaguar says that after installing this particular update, wireless software updates can be made on the I-Pace without going to a reseller.)

Jaguar is one of the many car manufacturers participating in F1 E, which has a history of 5 years and is a global pure electric racing series. However, in 2018, the company also launched a complete I-Pace support series for F1 E, and Jaguar says the road version of I-Pace particularly benefits from what it learned when it launched the support series. With the update of the new software, I-Pace will now transfer power from the two motors to the wheels more efficiently. The company has also learned how to better manage the heat of the battery pack so that cars can turn off cooling vents more frequently, thereby reducing aerodynamic resistance. Drivers will also be able to run I-Pace at a lower cost.

Jaguar said the expansion was partly due to data it obtained from thousands of I-Pace data over the past year. In other words, the updated type I bag will make better use of the motor to power the brakes, thus giving more energy back to the battery. Jaguar also said it had perfected its distance calculation algorithm to more accurately reflect how many miles were left at any given moment.

To say the least, the software design of traditional car companies is not well known. So I'm glad to see that Jaguar found some way to squeeze its battery pack for another 12 miles in I-Pace 's early life. Better yet, the company offers free extra mileage to all existing I-Pace owners, even if they need to go to a dealer. This is more likely to be swallowed up than GM's recent announcement that automakers will only offer an increase in the Bolt of their new electric vehicles in the mass market.
