Google is developing and testing an application designed to help people with language disabilities communicate with others more easily. The Android app Project Relate is now inviting "the first group of people" to test the product, the company said in a blog post on Tuesday. The application is also designed to help facilitate interaction with Google Assistant.
"[we] realize that our speech recognition technology can be improved to help people with language disabilities understand better," Julie Katio, Google's research product manager, said at the Inventors @ Google virtual event on Tuesday. "Standard speech recognition is not always suitable for people with atypical speech because the algorithm is not trained for their speech samples."
The Relate application consists of three main functions. Listen to a real-time transcript of what someone is saying, allowing them to send what they say in text, copy and paste it into other applications, or let people read what they say. Repeat what someone has said in a clear computer voice, hoping to make face-to-face interaction more seamless. Finally, Assistant connects to Google Assistant to execute commands such as "selfie", "turn off lights" or "play music".
Google is looking for English-speaking testers in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand to try out the application and provide feedback. Early testers at Project Relate will be asked to record phrases that the application will then use to better understand their unique voice patterns. They will then be given access to listen, repeat, and assistant functions. Anyone interested in testing ProjectRelate applications can fill out a form on g.co/ProjectRelate. Google said the team would respond "in the coming months".
Project Relate is part of Google's ongoing efforts to make technology easier for people with disabilities. Other applications and features launched by the company in recent years include Live Transcribe, which provides real-time voice-to-text transcription for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and Lookout, which helps blind or visually impaired people identify food labels, pinpoint objects in a room, and scan files and currencies.
