Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

When installing Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the following situation appears in the installation wizard: When installing the unified version, two installation modes appear: Full Installation Mode and Server Core Installation Mode

Many people who are unfamiliar with Windows Server 2008 may not understand this pattern. Here I briefly introduce:

1. Full installation mode: If you choose this mode to install a good system, it has the simple interface style of Windows system, which is what we traditionally understand as Windows Server: most operations can be completed through the interface. As shown below:

2. Server Core installation mode.

In this mode, the installed system is command-line only, and all operations must be done by command (similar to early Linux). As shown below:

Server Core mode brings a lot of pressure to many administrators, after all, all operations are completed through commands, many ITPro and IT enthusiasts have raised such questions: Why did Microsoft develop such a mode of Windows Server ?

Microsoft has two main considerations: reducing system resource consumption and improving system security.

1) Reduce the consumption of system resources.

The release of Windows Vista dealt Microsoft a big blow. Many customers who buy Windows Vista licenses downgrade their Windows XP systems, including Microsoft's own admission that Windows Vista is a failure. The main reason for the failure was that Microsoft compromised hardware manufacturers too much, resulting in too high hardware requirements for Windows Vista.

Windows Server 2008 took this as a lesson, so in Windows Server 2008 more Server Core mode (personal guess)

We can imagine an enterprise environment, if the company has a server, only 2GB of memory, if installed in full mode, as long as the computer as soon as the boot 1GB memory is consumed by the system, such a situation is not acceptable to many companies. If Server Core is installed, the system boots up to 256MB of memory, so that excess memory can be saved for user access. This is a good way to increase the number and speed of user visits.

2) Improved system security

Since Server Core mode is a minimal environment for Windows Server. There are few interface-based management tools, which ensure that as few zones as possible start services and open ports. Windows Server *** is reduced to ensure the security of Windows Server.

Although Server Core has these two great advantages, many administrators still choose to "stay away" due to the complexity of administration.

But don't worry, some foreign Microsoft enthusiasts have written some management tools under the Server Core platform, of which CoreConfigrator is the most famous.

In Windows Server 2008 Server Core, use CoreConfigrator 1.0

In Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core, use Corefighter 2.0

Since CoreConfigrator 1.0 is relatively simple, there is no need to introduce it here. The following mainly talks about the configuration of CoreConfigrator 2.0 under Windows Server 2008 R2. Here are the steps.

1. Install Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core System

2. Download CoreConfigrator 2.0 from the website (download address: http://coreconfig.codeplex.com/releases/view/36678)

3. (particularly important)

Go to Server Core System to install two components Microsoft.net FrameWork 2.0 and Windows Powershell. The order reads as follows:

DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx2-ServerCore

DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:MicrosoftWindowsPowerShell

4. Insert the downloaded CoreConfigrator 2.0 ISO file into the system. Run Start_CoreConfig.wsf in the image to display the CoreConfig 2.0 administration interface

Core Configrator 2.0 interface management is very simple, there is no need to explain in detail.

Windows Server 2008 (R2) Server Core:

Windows Server 2008 (R2) Server Core is generally used as a company's basic application platform, and is generally not used as an application platform.

Recommended Server Core servers: File Server ,DC, DNS,CA, DHCP,Hyper-v .

Server platforms that cannot be used: SQL Server ,Exchange Server ,RDP Server, etc.

Windows Server 2008 (R2) Server Core can be used as a Web Server background, but note:

Windows Server 2008 Server Core. Unable to mount websites developed on the. net platform

If the system is Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core. Any web can be mounted.

3.、If you install features or roles using commands in Server Core, the names of the features and roles must be exactly correct (including case).

4.、Windows Server 2008 Full Installation and Server Core Installation cost the same when purchased.

(Many people think that Server Core is cheaper than fully installed, which is wrong)
